In USTA’s Best Tennis Town contest, Richmond took home $25,000 for its third-place finish.
Winners were announced between US Open matches on Labor Day during a special presentation in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Charleston, South Carolina won the "Best Tennis Town" title and the $100,000 top prize. For winning second place, Atlanta received a check for $50,000.
The Honorable Ellen Robertson, Richmond City Council Vice President, and Eric Perkins, Richmond Tennis Association Vice President, represented Richmond in the awards ceremony, and of the three finalists, Richmond seemed to have the largest contingent of supporters on hand for the day’s festivities, including Richmonders Roslyn Johnson, Ron Robertson, Chrissie Perkins, Cris and Melissa Robinson, Tom and Terri Hood, Hugh and Paddi Waters, Steve Dominick and Lisa Deane, as well as USTA Vice President Joe Grover and his wife Shima, USTA/Mid-Atlantic Section President Chris Reynolds, and USTA/Virginia President Wayne McCoy, among others.
Special thanks go to the "Tees by Teens" entrepreneurial program at Bellemeade Community Center for designing the t-shirts that "Team Richmond" proudly wore throughout the day promoting Richmond tennis to the more than 50,000 people in attendance.
