Why John McCain Wants to Aid Syrian Terrorists
His trip to Syria in support of lung-eating savages
When John McCain slipped into Syria the other day to meet with Islamist rebels, Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted “best wishes” to his fellow warmonger and claimed “dibs on his office if he doesn’t come back.” Leave it to Sen. Graham, who has been agitating along with McCain for the US to send weapons to the rebels, to joke about the untrustworthiness of the very people he wants to arm. But the rebels’ savagery is no joke: we are, after all, talking about people who eat the lungs of their enemies.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) had it kind of right when he admonished the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after it voted for a bill that would arm Syria’s Islamist insurgents:
“This is an important moment. You will be funding, today, the allies of al Qaeda. It’s an irony you cannot overcome.”
And yet irony doesn’t quite cover it: insanity is more like it. Here is a man who is the Republican party’s voice when it comes to foreign policy, a role he has appropriated due to his intimacy with those who book the Sunday talk shows, and yet when it comes to America’s relationship with the rest of the world his utter and complete ignorance is appalling.
He told us the invasion and occupation of Iraq would be “fairly easy.” He pontificated that the anthrax attacks were delivered by the Iraqis. His preferred policy for Afghanistan: we should “muddle through,” rather than withdraw. When the North Koreans started acting out, he averred we ought to threaten them with “extinction.” And when Russia and the former Soviet republic of Georgia got into an armed conflict over the breakaway province of South Ossetia, McCain announced “Today, We Are All Georgians” and demanded we go to war with Moscow. He thinks Iran is training Al Qaeda: he also thinks Iraq shares a border with Pakistan.
In short, McCain doesn’t know s%^*t about foreign policy: he has been wrong, wrong, wrong about absolutely everything. So it isn’t merely ironic that he is leading the charge in demanding we intervene in Syria – it’s downright crazy.
What’s puzzling is why anyone is listening to him. And his fellow Senators are certainly paying attention: an overwhelming bipartisan vote of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the McCain-Menendez bill authorizing aid to the rebels (there were only three dissents).
Most of the other Senators weren’t that impressed with Sen. Paul’s argument: “I don’t think any member of this committee would vote for anything we thought was going to arm al Qaeda,” said Republican rising star Marco Rubio.
Isn’t that what they were saying in the days before our Libyan “allies” murdered the American ambassador to Libya?
“Al Qaeda, unfortunately, is well-armed,” added Menendez. “That is the present reality in Syria.”
Translation: What difference will a few more anti-tank guns make? Which ought to tell us why the New Jersey Democratic Senator isn’t exactly a candidate for a MacArthur “genius” grant.
So what did McCain do in Syria? The military backbone of the opposition is the al-Nusra Front, which has recently pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda. Did McCain meet with their commanders – in spite of the fact that they have recently been added to the State Department’s list of officially-designated terrorist organizations? He didn’t say. What we do know about his trip is that he went and listened to their demands that we set up a no fly zone, send them guns and cash, and attack Hezbollah in Lebanon – yes, Lebanon. They want us to widen the war, and naturally Sen. McCain is for that, too. Has there ever been a war he didn’t want to escalate?
His trip was facilitated by the “Syrian Emergency Task Force,” a mysterious group set up by a former Senate staffer, Moustafa Mouaz, which sprang into existence fully-funded and which naturally doesn’t have to register as an agent of a foreign power – since the Foreign Agents Registration Act is only selectively enforced. Mouaz is a former aide to Senator Blanche Lincoln and Rep. Vic Synder, both liberal to centrist Democrats. Here he is cheering on al-Nusra – the official al-Qaeda franchise in Syria – on Twitter. (See also here and here.) The Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP), the “educational” branch of AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobbying group, lists him on their web site as one of their trusted “experts”: he recently addressed a WINEP conference.
The Israel lobby’s involvement in all this is somewhat obscure, but WINEP has been on the scene providing quotes and rationales for US intervention, and now with the Israeli air strikes and all this talk of Hezbollah propping up a supposedly faltering Assad, it’s clear why: the Israelis want to use this opportunity to take out another of their enemies. They lured us into attacking Iraq, and now they are insisting we go after Iran – but as an appetizer, so to speak, they’re inviting us to first gobble up Syria before partaking of the main course.
The American people are overwhelmingly opposed to US intervention in Syria, including helping the jihadist rebels. But their opinion doesn’t count for much in Washington, D.C., where lobbyists, both foreign and domestic, rule the roost. Murky organizations with dubious ties to foreign groups, like the “Syrian Emergency Task Force,” have more sway than Joe Sixpack, and certainly WINEP, and – standing behind it – AIPAC have the kind of clout that could engineer US intervention in Syria’s vicious civil war.
A hoary coalition of “liberal” interventionists, Syrian exiles, and Israel Firsters is pushing the Obama administration to meet the rebels’ demands: they think we can “vet” the rebels to make sure al-Nusra is left out of the goodies package we’re sending them. This is a fantasy: do these people really think we can navigate the complexities of the Syrian opposition with any certainty? Of course we can’t. Not that Sen. McCain really cares: he hasn’t learned anything from Benghazi, even though he bloviates about it constantly. There we armed the Libyan rebels, and they turned those very same weapons on us – killing our Ambassador and three others.
Another “irony” for Sen. Paul to note: the same Moustafa Mouaz who is now serving as the executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force formerly held the same position for – you guessed it! – the Libyan Emergency Task Force. And we know how well that worked out for us.
Funny how these “emergency task forces” show up at precisely the right time, loaded with funding, and with good connections to the mainstream media and prominent politicians, – like Athena emerging fully armed from the head of Zeus.
Where does the money come from? Who is providing the media connections, the organizational heft, and the cold hard cash it takes to make a major push for US intervention in Syria?
Finally, it may be initially puzzling to contemplate the support for aiding the rebels coming from supposedly staunch opponents of “terrorism,” such as McCain and Graham. But when you think about it, it makes perfect sense: those two don’t care so much about fighting jihadists as they do about effecting regime-change throughout the Middle East. Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran – all are in the War Party’s sights, and the Two Amigos are leading the charge. Forget about the “war on terrorism” – that was a cover story from the very beginning. The real story of American foreign policy in the new millennium is all about regime change.
NOTES IN THE MARGIN
Yes, it’s just a coincidence that this group has just sprung up, with backing from major politicians in both parties, with a Washington, D.C., headquarters, and an executive director who picks up and flies to meetings with Syrian jihadists at the drop of a hat. Of course, I don’t know that foreign money is pouring into the pro-jihadists’ coffers, but I do know that Qatar and Saudi Arabia – two countries not exactly facing a cash shortage – are eagerly funding the Syrian rebel movement. As to whether that includes its American cheerleading section – we’ll, you’ll have to ask Mr. Mouaz.
What I do know is this: the anti-interventionists don’t have this kind of cash laying around. We can’t go to the Emir of Qatar, or the Saudi king, and ask him for a donation. The Washington lobbyists have no use for us – because, after all, we’re trying to oust them from their perch as the decisive players in the foreign policy game.
No, instead of going to the Power Players for what we need in order to scrape by, we are going to you – our readers and supporters. Don’t want us to get dragged into yet another war in the Middle East –well then, what are you waiting for? The War Party isn’t waiting, of that you can be sure: the latest news is that the President has asked the Pentagon to draw up plans for a “no fly zone” in Syria. There isn’t a moment to spare. Make your tax-deductible donation to Antiwar.com today – and beat the foreign lobbyists at their own game!

Once we're talking about the real story behind the story "regime change" isn't the appropriate term. It's not the case that one regime replaces another one. As the linked article mentions, it's about destroying governments, and hence peace and stability with them. Why israel and their spokescreature McCain want that, that would be another real story. Because it's not as Clarke was told, that the Middle East is coming "under our control", quite the opposite. And isn't Assad good for israel in some regard? Just what is israel up to?

Technology in and of itself does not win wars. "Officially" arming al Qaeda and Friends to Some of Al Qaeda (FSA) shouldn't be too much of a headache for the SAA primarily because the overall 'rebel' fight appears less to do with formulating either a military zone or a functional government and more to do with tit-for-tat skirmishes and general mayhem. Not exactly a winning recipe. So far, the clear majority of the Syrian population have not sided with this model of, uh, independence…?
Al Qaeda and FSA have blown up and burned shopping centers and as much of the financial district(s) as they could. Looted government buildings, then retreated. Terrorized civilians that would not join or surrender or play along. Used captured Syrian soldiers as suicide drivers (NYT). This is not your storybook revo of honorable fighters trying to free a world of tyranny, but a group seemingly hell-bent on prolonging chaos and instability.
However, IF the SAA winter/spring surge have any bearing, then SAA should be able to quickly secure the new weaponry from US-FR-UK…(The official 'arming' –is one more bluff. I don't think the trio want to continue this failed plan, but you know, they've bluffed us into this war…so who knows.) But I'm putting my wager that SAA will end up thwarting McCain's Munchers and then end up with western arms and hand them over to Syrian Republic militias –newly recruited from civilians tired of "rebel" forces selling Syria piece by piece to Turkish merchants….and their German bank associates.

"A man who is the Republican party’s voice when it comes to foreign policy, a role he has appropriated due to his intimacy with those who book the Sunday talk shows."
Yep, that's the key. In the early 70s, all of a sudden all GOP spokesmen on the networks for foreign policy and often defense matters were not Republican office holders, they were Democrats who 'converted.' In time they took hold. The neocons are top down. They were imposed on the party from board rooms in NYC, not from the party members from Main Street. They have no base in the party. I defy any Antiwar reader to identify a single precinct that the neocons have ever carried for the GOP.
Who made the corporate decisions that inflicted the John McCains on the American people? What do they have in common? Hint, it has to do with religion/ethnic loyalty. Call me an anti-Semite if you and Bibi care to.
No more Israel First, bring back America Only. It is the measurement every other nation uses.

It's all about Israel, and part of the Neo Con clean break policy that will weaken Israel's neighbors by having them fight amongst themselves with Israel then gaining control and hegemony in the region. This current policy is just a prelude to war with Iran and Hezbollah. But this is a dangerous game as it might not work ;and if it does, there is the possibility that any group that comes to power will then focus on Israel and the United States.

McCain didn't used to be this nutty. If I recall correctly, when he ran against GWB in the 2000 primaries he was quite reasonable. Remember 'the straight talk express.' Seems like he has gotten much worse since 9/11 and especially since he lost to Obama in '08. How much is that loss still clouding his judgment? I don't think he has ever gotten over the fact that he was soundly beaten by a first-term unknown senator with an Arab-sounding name. How much are his years as a tortured POW still affecting his thinking? Talk about bad judgment – let's not forget that he picked Sarah Palin for VP.

The call for "regime change" came from the White paper written the Likud party. The authoe was Dick Perl an American working for the USA defense department. Why he was writing a white paper dore a foreign power is unknown. One think was very true is he made hundreds of millions off the invasion to rerime change Iraq. Tony Blair net worth is some $200 million. It wouls appear that the real goal of the regime change was create a lot of new millionaires associated with increasing the power of one religion who also owns a nation. Anything associated with John McCain will bring more of the same.

The Soviets used to be the US's mortal enemy in bad old days of the Cold War. Now it seems that Putin and the Russians have become the good guys. I'm now thinking that the only thing that has held the US back from invading Syria is fear of what Russia might do. I'm no big fan of Obama, but I'm thankful every day that bloodthirsty, old man McCain was not elected president.

Mc cains Middle East policies do not seem to have much to do with positive regime change, humanitarian efforts or even about doing things that will help the united states or israel in any long term way. Pne the other hand It seems highly unlikely that Mc Cain is an idiot or crazy it seems more likely that he is getting richer and his friends are getting richer and they are all laughing on the way to the bank. It is a simple as this, When things do not add up there is almost always a hidden agenda.

Sometimes our "leaders" are so bloody senseless that I wonder if they aren't doing it on purpose just to mess with us, or perhaps as a bizarre experiment.
Take this story. If you or I were to send money or guns to al-Nusra the U.S. government would no doubt prosecute us for "aiding terrorists". But at the same time that same U.S. government plans to forcibly take money from us to give to al-Nusra.
"Kafkaesque" hardly covers it.

I was once smitten by the USA. It was 1969 when Apollo mission landed on the Moon in name of all mankind. Since then I am loosing faith in this once great country and what remained today is just a hope that there are still people who are not completely brainwashed by the US propaganda and try to stop the warmongers like McCain to destroy this world. Weapons can win a battle, maybe a war but they can't achieve peace. Unfortunately, America's politicians do not want to see further than the shores of their own continent. They are totally convinced that their weapons are invincible, that money can buy everything. Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria – countries destroyed by America, millions of innocent people killed and crippled – and still not enough. I feel like in Germany 1938 – the nation was convinced that they have to save their homeland … I think the war is nearing, there is no way to achieve peace the way it is going – quite opposite – and I want to express my concern and my feelings and maybe contribute a little to your effort to change this threat. There is enough place in this world for all people, but we have to share all our resources and have understanding and respect for each other. (I am a Christian.)

The Arab Spring has been over since the bombs starting falling on Libya two years ago. All Washington had to do to kill it was to militarize the situation on the ground. So from that perspective, Libya in 2011 and now Syria are policy successes. The uprisings of the Arab world starting in 2011 are gradually being taken out of the political arena, where Washington is always weak, and moved onto the military battlefield, where Washington always dominates.
We're learning something with Syria. First of all, the Libyan people did not overthrow the Gaddafi government. It was destroyed by a foreign invasion from the air. Also, I don't think the September 11, 2012 in Benghazi was a case of "blow back", as much as it was the expected resistance of a local population to a foreign government imprisoning members of the local population. The "consulate" in Benghazi was nothing of the sort, as it was holding prisoners. Not something a "diplomatic mission" is supposed to be doing.
The Syrian government isn't going anywhere, as long as Washington and its European allies don't drop the anvil with another air war, a la Libya 2011. It will also depend on how much Russia digs in on Syria. Washington cancelled the debts that the Gaddafi government owed to Russia, and the Russians don't want this to happen in Syria.
Washington is already arming the anti-Assad forces by proxy. Where do Gulf Cooperation (Among Reactionary Monarchies) Council get its military weaponry from? Doing it directly only would help to clear the air on who is really behind the anti-Assad forces.
Now enter the charade of peace talks, absent ending the flow of arms to the "rebels". We can all smell this rat from many miles away. The "rebels" are making the entirely realistic demand of the complete exclusion of the Assad government from the political process:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/may/29/syria…
Of course, this joker is being enabled by Obama's "Assad must go" position. As long as Washington persists on promising the hand over of Damascus by force of arms to the rebels, then there simply isn't any point in negotiating a political settlement to the civil war.

The whole point is strategic. It is to suck Iran into supporting its Syrian ally with increasing numbers of troops. Iran wants regional empire, so they have no choice but to send huge armies to Syria. Syria is too important to let go. The US and its allies send in Al Qaeda terrorists. This way, Iran can be bled to death in a war far from its homeland.

This maybe why Russia warned Israel about flying bombing raids into Syria . NATO setup a no fly zone over Libya that turned out to be furnishing the U.S. airforce for Al Qaida to overthrow Gaddafi .
Now they wish to do the same thing to Assad . Did the same thing to Yugoslavia too .
