Joint Press Release: 20 Egyptian organizations in solidarity with the NGO workers sentenced to prison: Politically motivated case a fatal blow to freedom of expression and association

The undersigned Egyptian rights organizations condemn in the strongest terms the verdict issued on June 4 by the Cairo Criminal Court which convicted 43 staff members of international NGOs in the so-called “foreign funding case.” The defendants, who include nationals from Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, the US, Germany, Serbia, and Norway, received prison terms ranging from one to five years and were each fined LE1,000.

The Muslim Brotherhood lays the foundations for a new police state by exceeding the Mubarak regime’s mechanisms to suppress civil society

The undersigned associations and organizations are deeply concerned by attempts to suppress civil society institutions, especially human rights organizations. The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), are currently seeking to curb the right to freedom of association through legal restrictions even more severe than those imposed by the Mubarak regime in Law 84/2002, through a bill titled “Civil Society Organizations” announced by the Presidency yesterday evening.

Egyptian Court Orders 30-Day Ban On YouTube Over Hosting “The Innocence of Muslims” Video and There’s Plenty of Blame to Go Around

This weekend, Cairo Administrative Court issued a 30-day ban order on YouTube and all other websites that host or link to content from the anti-Islam film “The Innocence of Muslims,” which was protested worldwide after footage from the trailer was shown on Egyptian television.

Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault condemns the attacks on women in Tahrir Square on Friday January 25th, the failure of political groups to secure the square and unprofessional media conduct

On Friday the 25th of January 2013, in the midst of large demonstrations marking the second anniversary of the beginning of the Egyptian revolution, horrific sexual crimes were committed against women in and around Tahrir square. Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault (OpAntiSH) received 19 reports of group sexual assaults against women in the area, which included the use of life-threatening violence in some cases.

Reuters photojournalist prosecuted by before military tribunal

The undersigned Egyptian human rights organizations strongly condemn the arrest of photojournalist Mohamed Sabry and his referral to an expedited military trial after he was detained while preparing a story for Reuters in the Rafah area in northern Sinai. We demand that Sabry be released immediately and that the Military Prosecution drop the charges of being present in a military zone without permission and taking photographs.

On Friday November 9th 2012, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), the New Women Foundation (NWF) and Women and Memory Forum (WMF) joined other global organizations in the 'One Day, One Struggle' campaign to celebrate everyday feminism, women’s daily struggles and commemorate the life of Iman Salama, the young woman who fought against harassment and lost her life as a result.

Eight rights groups file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor on the arrest of Albert Saber Ayyad and his family’s expulsion from their home

Today eight advocacy groups filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor against the Minister of Interior and several police personnel with the Marg police station regarding the arrest of Albert Saber Ayyad and his detention without a warrant from the prosecution and without being apprehended in the commission of a crime, on the grounds that several residents of Marg filed a complaint against him accusing him of defaming religion.

Administrative Court Rules in Favor of Appeal Presented by Human Rights NGOs, Revokes Decree Enabling Military Intelligence and Military Police to Arrest Civilians

On Tuesday, June 26, the First Circuit Administrative Court – Individual Disputes, headed by Counselor Ali Fekry, issued a decision to revoke Decree No. 4991/2012 of the Minister of Justice that granted military intelligence and military police judicial powers to arrest civilians.
