The undersigned Egyptian rights organizations condemn in the strongest terms the verdict issued on June 4 by the Cairo Criminal Court which convicted 43 staff members of international NGOs in the so-called “foreign funding case.” The defendants, who include nationals from Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, the US, Germany, Serbia, and Norway, received prison terms ranging from one to five years and were each fined LE1,000.

This morning 25 Egyptian advocacy organizations filed a lawsuit before the Court of Administrative Justice seeking the annulment of the President’s decree issuing a new constitutional declaration on 21 November and an expedited injunction suspending the decree. The suit (no. 9252/67JY) asks that a hearing on the petition, filed with the first circuit (rights and liberties), be set as soon as possible.

The following group of allied Egyptian women's organisations wishes to express its condemnation of the threats faced by the psychologist and patients' rights activist Dr. Basma Abd el-Aziz, as well as her referral to administrative investigation based on the statement that she issued on Monday 24th October. Dr. Abd el-Aziz, in her capacity as Director of Information of the General Secretariat for Mental Health, issued a statement opposing the referral of political activists and opinion makers to mental hospitals, on the pretext of assessing their mental health. This was in reference to the referral of activist Maikel Nabil, subjected to a military trial on the charge of insulting the military, to the mental hospital in Abbassiya.
The Mubarak Regime Persists
The undersigned rights organizations decisively condemn the exploitation of the political crisis between the forces of the revolution and those managing the country’s affairs in the transitional period as an excuse to employ the same repressive tools and means that the regime of deposed president Hosni Mubarak used against its enemies and critics, while foregoing dialogue, negotiations, and political solutions in favor of the old security approach.
