Recommendations

  • 1. What is NYTimes Recommendations?

    NYTimes Recommendations creates a personalized list of recommended reading, pointing you to NYTimes.com content we think you'll find interesting. Recommendations are based on what you've read on NYTimes.com (both the standard site and the mobile site).

    On article pages, the Recommended for You tab provides links to suggested articles.

    To see your personalized recommendations page, click All Recommendations at the top of the tab or Go to Your Recommendations at the bottom of the tab.

    You'll get an overview of your NYTimes.com reading history, including the number of articles you've read in the past month, lists of your top sections and topics, and links to recent reading. Your personalized Recommendations page is visible only to you, and only when you are logged in to NYTimes.com.

    Note: When you're not logged in, the Recommended for You tab on article pages is labeled Show Recommendations.

  • 2. How does NYTimes Recommendations work?

    NYTimes Recommendations uses your NYTimes.com reading history to identify your most-read topics and sections. Based on what you've read in the past 30 days, NYTimes Recommendations suggests additional content you might like. The more you read, the more accurate the recommendations become.

  • 3. How do I start using NYTimes Recommendations?

    There's nothing to set up or install — NYTimes Recommendations is an active part of the site. NYTimes Recommendations uses browser cookies to build your reading history and determine your top sections and topics. To get better recommendations, just keep reading. New recommendations will appear as we analyze your reading history.

    Please note: If you clear your browser cookies, NYTimes Recommendations will lose track of your reading history. For best results, stay logged in and do not clear your browser cookies.

  • 4. Where do recommendations appear?

    On article pages, you'll see a list of recommendations on the Recommended for You tab. (When you're not logged in, this tab is labeled Show Recommendations.)

    To view the list alongside a snapshot of your reading habits and history, click All Recommendations at the top of the tab or Go to Your Recommendations at the bottom of the tab. Your personalized Recommendations page appears.

    On article pages, you can hide the list of recommendations at any time by clicking the Don't Show Recommendations link at the bottom of the tab. To show your recommendations again later, click the Show Recommendations link at the bottom of the Most E-Mailed or Most Viewed tab.

    Note: If you choose to hide the list of recommendations and then you later clear your browser cookies, your choice will be reset and the recommendations list will be shown again.

  • 5. Why do I see only a few recommendations?

    When you're not logged in to NYTimes.com, the Show Recommendations tab and Recommendations page provide a limited selection of recommendations based on recent reading history. To view your fully personalized page and reading history, log in to NYTimes.com.

    If you are logged in but you still don't see any recommendations, you may have hidden the Recommended for You list. To see your recommendations again, click the Show Recommendations link at the bottom of the Most E-Mailed or Most Viewed tab.

  • 6. How frequently are new recommendations generated?

    Recommendations are generated approximately every 12 hours, to ensure that you see new recommendations each day.

  • 7. Why are you recommending articles I've already read?

    If you visit NYTimes.com on multiple computers or mobile devices, you may see recommendations for articles you've already read. Also, if you have cleared your browser cookies, you have effectively "reset" NYTimes Recommendations and may see articles you've already read.

    To mark an article as "read," simply click that link in the list of recommendations. This will also improve the recommendations you see in the future.

  • 8. How do you determine my Most Read Topics?

    Each NYTimes.com article is assigned topic tags that reflect the content of the article. As you read articles, we use these tags to determine your most-read topics.

    To search for additional articles on one of your most-read topics, click that topic on your personalized Recommendations page. To learn more about topic tags, visit Times Topics.

  • 9. Can I customize my top sections or other aspects of my reading profile?

    We don't currently support custom top sections or topics, but you can change them simply by reading more or fewer articles on a particular topic, or by spending more or less time in a particular section of NYTimes.com.

  • 10. I'm concerned about privacy. Does NYTimes Recommendations track what I do on NYTimes.com?

    NYTimes Recommendations does make use of your reading history on NYTimes.com, but only in order to build your reading profile and to make accurate suggestions for content we think you might be interested in. We do not share your reading history or trends with other users or other sites. NYTimes Recommendations fully complies with the New York Times Privacy Policy.

  • 11. Can other NYTimes.com readers see my history or trends?

    No. Your personalized Recommendations page is visible only to you, only when you are logged in to NYTimes.com.

  • 12. Can I recommend NYTimes.com content to other users directly, or can they recommend content to me?

    Not through NYTimes Recommendations. You can share content with your Facebook friends by recommending NYTimes.com items on Facebook. NYTimes Recommendations creates suggestions for you based on your reading history; it is not a social tool.

  • 13. Does NYTimes Recommendations use my Facebook recommendations or other social media activity?

    NYTimes Recommendations does not connect to your Twitter or Facebook accounts and does not share your reading history with other sites. Articles that you view are considered "read" for the purposes of generating recommendations, whether or not you recommend the article on Facebook, post it to Twitter or perform any other social actions on the page.

  • 14. Can I get recommendations on my mobile device?

    Yes. Recommendations are available on the mobile version of the site — simply visit NYTimes.com in your mobile browser. Be sure to log in when you visit the mobile site, to continue to build your reading history and improve the quality of your list of recommendations.

    Recommendations are not currently available in NYTimes mobile apps.
