7/15/2013 Blake Geoffrion, C Geoffrion is retiring from the NHL at age 25 due to lingering effects of a skull fracture and concussion sustained during an American Hockey League game in November.

Analysis: The 6-foot-1 center was skating for Hamilton of the AHL when he sustained a depressed skull fracture from a hit by Syracuse defenseman Jean-Philippe Cote on Nov. 9. Geoffrion underwent surgery the next day.
7/15/2013 Josh Bailey, LW The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with restricted free agent forward Josh Bailey on a five-year, $16.5 million deal.

Analysis: Bailey, the Islanders' No. 9 pick in the 2008 draft, had 11 goals and eight assists in 38 games and added three assists in six playoff games.
7/15/2013 Ilya Kovalchuk, LW Russian team SKA St. Petersburg says it has signed forward Ilya Kovalchuk to a four-year contract. Kovalchuk walked away from $77 million left on his 15-year contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Analysis: Kovalchuk has represented Russia at three Winter Olympics, nine world championships, one world junior championship and the 2004 World Cup. He played with SKA St. Petersburg during the recent lockout.
7/14/2013 Max Domi, C The Phoenix Coyotes have signed Domi to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Analysis: The deal with Domi, the No. 12 pick in this year's draft, was announced on Sunday. The Toronto-born forward had 39 goals and 87 points in 64 games last season for London of the OHL. Domi, the son of former NHL player Tie Domi, led London in goals and points and tied for first on the team in assists and plus-minus.
7/12/2013 Marcus Kruger, C The Chicago Blackhawks have re-signed Kruger to a two-year contract.

Analysis: The 23-year-old Kruger had four goals and nine assists in 47 games this season, helping Chicago win the Stanley Cup. He had three goals and two assists in the playoffs. The Blackhawks announced the deal on Friday. Kruger was a restricted free agent. Kruger has 13 goals and 26 assists in 125 career regular-season games over three seasons, all with the Blackhawks.
7/12/2013 Rasmus Ristolainen, D The Buffalo Sabres have signed Ristolainen, a first-round pick in this year's draft, to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Analysis: The deal with Ristolainen, the No. 8 pick, was announced Friday night. Ristolainen was the first of two defensemen selected by the Sabres in the first round. Russian prospect Nikita Zadorov was taken with the No. 16 choice. Ristolainen, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound Finnish prospect, has been participating at Buffalo's development camp and is expected to compete for a roster spot with the Sabres next season.
7/12/2013 Erik Condra, RW The Ottawa Senators have re-signed Condra to a two-year deal, avoiding arbitration with the restricted free-agent forward. Condra's deal is worth $2.5 million, and he'll count $1.25 million against Ottawa's salary cap.

Analysis: Condra played all 48 games last year for the Senators, providing some consistency during an injury-plagued season. He had four goals and eight assists. The 22-year-old had a goal and six assists in 10 playoff games. He had eight goals and 17 assists in his first full NHL season in 2011-12.
7/12/2013 Jon Landry, D The Minnesota Wild have agreed to terms on one-year, two-way contracts with free agent defensemen Jonathon Blum and Landry. The team announced the deals on Friday, but the contracts pay less if the player is in the minors.

Analysis: The 30-year-old Landry played in the AHL last season.
7/12/2013 Jonathon Blum, D The Minnesota Wild have agreed to terms on one-year, two-way contracts with Blum and Jon Landry. The team announced the deals on Friday, but the contracts pay less if the player is in the minors.

Analysis: The 24-year-old Blum had one goal and six assists in 35 games for Nashville last season. He was a first-round draft pick by the Predators in 2007. Over the past three years, Blum played 103 games.
7/12/2013 Patrice Bergeron, C Bergeron has signed an eight-year extension through the 2021-2022 season. The contract worth $52 million begins after next season, the last of Bergeron's current three-year deal with Boston.

Analysis: Bergeron tied for the team lead with nine postseason goals. He played the last game of the Stanley Cup finals with a broken rib and separated shoulder. After that Game 6 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, he was hospitalized with a punctured lung. He was released two days later.
7/11/2013 Tim Kennedy, LW The Phoenix Coyotes have signed center Tim Kennedy to a one-year, two-way contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Analysis: Kennedy scored two goals in 13 games with the San Jose Sharks last season, spending most of his time with Worcester of the AHL. In parts of five NHL seasons with San Jose, Florida, and Buffalo, the 27-year-old has played in 125 regular season games, with 13 goals and 18 assists. Kennedy also has appeared in nine playoff games, with a goal and two assists.
7/11/2013 Ilya Kovalchuk, LW Kovalchuk is retiring from the NHL and returning to Russia.

Analysis: The Devils released the stunning news Thursday afternoon in a statement, saying that the 30-year-old Kovalchuk had alerted them earlier this year that he wanted to return home with his family after 11 seasons in the NHL. The move is more surprising because Kovalchuk signed a $100 million, 15-year contract in 2010. He'll be walking away from it.
7/11/2013 Michal Jordan, D The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with two players on one-year, two-way contracts. The Hurricanes announced deals Thursday with right wing Aaron Palushaj and Jordan.

Analysis: Jordan will receive $550,000 with the Hurricanes or $125,000 in the minors with a guarantee of at least $150,000. Jordan made his NHL debut with Carolina last season and averaged 10:41 of ice time in five games.
7/11/2013 Aaron Palushaj, RW The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with two players on one-year, two-way contracts. The Hurricanes announced deals Thursday with Palushaj and defenseman Michal Jordan.

Analysis: Palushaj will make $600,000 on the NHL level or $175,000 in the minor leagues with a guarantee of at least $225,000. The 23-year-old Palushaj had two goals and seven assists in 25 games last season for Colorado.
7/10/2013 Magnus Paajarvi, LW The St. Louis Blues have trade David Perron to the Edmonton Oilers for Magnus Paajarvi and a 2014 second-round draft pick.

Analysis: Paajarvi has 26 goals and 32 assists in 163 games with the Oilers. He was drafted 10th overall by Edmonton in 2009.
7/10/2013 David Perron, LW The St. Louis Blues have trade David Perron to the Edmonton Oilers for Magnus Paajarvi and a 2014 second-round draft pick.

Analysis: Perron, a 25-year old left-wing, had 10 goals and 15 assists in 48 games for St. Louis last season. In his career, Perron has 84 goals and 114 assists in 340 games. Perron has three more years left on his contract at a cap hit of just over $3.8 million. In Edmonton, Perron will be part of a young core of skilled players along with Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov.
7/10/2013 Justin Falk, D The Rangers reached agreements on deals with restricted free agent forward Carl Hagelin and newly acquired defenseman Justin Falk.

Analysis: The 24-year-old Falk, acquired by the Rangers from Minnesota on June 30, will earn $975,000 on his one-year contract. Falk had three assists and 40 penalty minutes in 36 games with Minnesota last season.
7/10/2013 Carl Hagelin, LW The Rangers reached agreements on deals with restricted free agent forward Carl Hagelin and newly acquired defenseman Justin Falk.

Analysis: Hagelin agreed to a two-year, $4.5 contract. He will earn $2.1 million next season and $2.4 million in 2014-15. He carries a salary-cap hit of $2.25 million. Hagelin, who is also 24, had 10 goals, 14 assists and a plus-10 rating in playing in all 48 games last season. He ranked sixth on the team in points and goals and third in shots. New York went 14-2-1 when he had a point. In the playoffs, Hagelin had career-highs with three goals, six points and a plus-six rating.
7/10/2013 Alex Grant, D The Anaheim Ducks have signed Grant to a one-year contract through the 2013-14 season. He played in 46 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL last season, with four goals, 16 assists and 73 penalty minutes.

Analysis: Grant was acquired by Anaheim from Pittsburgh in exchange for left wing Harry Zolnierczyk on June 24.
7/10/2013 Mikael Backlund, C The Calgary Flames have signed Backlund to a two-year, $3 million contract. Backlund, a first-round pick by Calgary in the 2007 draft, played 32 games with the Flames last season.

Analysis: He had eight goals and eight assists but struggled with injuries. Backlund missed four weeks with a sprained knee ligament and sustained a foot fracture near the end of the season. In 170 career NHL games with the Flames, Backlund has 23 goals and 39 assists.
