Wave of attacks on Copts and churches: EIPR: authorities must take immediate action to protect citizens and houses of worship, bring perpetrators and inciters to justice

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) today warned about the gravity of sectarian violence and incitement seen in several governorates since the massive demonstrations and marches of 30 June. The way that state agencies, particularly the security apparatus, have dealt with these attacks is disturbing.

Impartial investigation necessary before Egypt spirals into violence

The undersigned organizations express their deep regret and strong condemnation of the excessive force used by army and security forces against supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi who were staging a sit-in in front of the premises of the Republican Guard. This violence left at least 51 dead and over 400 injured, according to official statements from the Ministry of Health.

The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) and the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) condemn the ruling by Luxor court of misdemeanor to fine Coptic teacher Demiana Abdelnour a sum of 100 thousand Egyptian pounds, while referring the civil component of the claim to the respective civil court in case no. 1647/2013 filed by the public prosecution.

Joint Press Release: 20 Egyptian organizations in solidarity with the NGO workers sentenced to prison: Politically motivated case a fatal blow to freedom of expression and association

The undersigned Egyptian rights organizations condemn in the strongest terms the verdict issued on June 4 by the Cairo Criminal Court which convicted 43 staff members of international NGOs in the so-called “foreign funding case.” The defendants, who include nationals from Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, the US, Germany, Serbia, and Norway, received prison terms ranging from one to five years and were each fined LE1,000.

“Illusions Dispelled” EIPR report sheds light on the failure of post revolution economic policies: respective governments never deviated from Mubarak’s economic legacy

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights released a report, “The Illusion Dispelled – Egypt's Economic Crisis: Causes - Alternatives - Remedies”, which assesses the economic performance of the successive post-revolution governments, criticizing them for their failure to create a new economic reality. Instead, their botched policies have only contributed to the economic decline.

The Muslim Brotherhood lays the foundations for a new police state by exceeding the Mubarak regime’s mechanisms to suppress civil society

The undersigned associations and organizations are deeply concerned by attempts to suppress civil society institutions, especially human rights organizations. The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) and its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), are currently seeking to curb the right to freedom of association through legal restrictions even more severe than those imposed by the Mubarak regime in Law 84/2002, through a bill titled “Civil Society Organizations” announced by the Presidency yesterday evening.

Groups oppose European Bank's plan to finance oil drilling in Egypt

On Wednesday 29 May, the European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) will vote on whether to make a $40 million loan to Kuwait Energy to drill and extract oil in Egypt. Egyptian and international organisations are pushing the board of the public multilateral bank to reject the loan – or at least postpone its decision.
