Somalia

The press in Somalia suffers of the non-existence of basic state and civil society structures due to the protracted civil war, which began in 1991. Few newspapers have survived in a country synonymous with the concept of failed nation. Besides the many casualties journalist suffer when trying to carry out their work, media outlets are also targeted by the warring militias, as in April 2007 when artillery shells targeted several television and newspapers headquarters. The security situation has forced many newspapers into closure, such as the Xog-Ogaal newspaper, one of the leading daily newspapers in Mogadishu.

With the exception of the newspapers the relatively stable breakaway, self-declared state of Somaliland in the north, few dailies are published on a regular basis in Somalia. Electronic newspapers published by Somalis living in the Diaspora are available online, mostly in English, but some also in Somali.
