Kem Knapp Sawyer

Kem mentors the Student Fellows in the Campus Consortium and also edits "Untold Stories" and e-books for the Pulitzer Center. Her reporting projects include writing on children at risk in Bangladesh, India and Haiti.

Kem has written several books for young readers – among them are Refugees: Seeking a Safe Haven, The Underground Railroad in American History, Lucretia Mott: Friend of Justice, and Freedom Calls: Journey of a Slave Girl, as well as biographies of Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi, Anne Frank, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Her articles and book reviews have appeared in The Washington Post, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, Scholastic News, Cobblestone, and The Five Owls. She is also a contributor to the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel Guides.

A graduate of Yale University, Kem majored in English and French. She was a teacher for many years: creative dramatics in elementary schools, English and drama in high school, and writing in the BFA program at the Corcoran College of Art + Design.
