European Security

This programme explores the strategic choices and realities faced by Britain and its partners in Europe and neighbouring regions.

Studying Britain's contribution to the integration of European defence and security, the European Security programme also monitors developments in the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Eastern Mediterranean and the former Soviet Union.

The programme works closely with governments, militaries and industries across Europe, including contract research and consultancy.

RUSI European Security research is organised into two main parts:

European institutions

The programme explores the future development and interaction of NATO, the EU, and the OSCE, including the role played by Britain in this process.

European geopolitics

The programme examines how national foreign and security policies affect the European order, with emphasis on the role of Britain's bilateral relationships with countries in Europe and the European neighbourhood.
