The University of Buckingham is grieved to learn of the death of Baroness Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher, as the former Secretary of State for Education, formally opened the University College at Buckingham in 1976, she gave Sir Rhodes Boyson, who was then the Under-Secretary of State for Education and Science, the support he needed in 1983 when we negotiated our Royal Charter with the Privy Council, and she was our second Chancellor, between 1992-1998.
Following her retirement as our Chancellor, Margaret Thatcher said that: “Buckingham is the only private university in the United Kingdom and it was opened in the 70s when I was the Cabinet Minister in charge of Education and Science: to see it flourish and prosper has been a great joy to me.”
Margaret Thatcher loved the University of Buckingham and we loved her: the values of independence and integrity that she proselytised were the values by which the University was created. On behalf of the whole University I send her family our deepest condolences.
