Event: The Middle-Out Moment

For decades, trickle-down economics has dominated the way we think about growth and the economy. But that model has failed us. Income inequality has grown as middle-class incomes stagnated, and many voters still think of the wealthy as “job creators.” Progressives need a new narrative to describe how prosperity happens: not from the top down, but from the middle out.

On Wednesday, June 19, join Democracy for an event co-hosted with the Center for American Progress (CAP) on “The Middle-Out Moment,” in conjunction with the release of our summer issue. Carmel Martin, executive vice president for policy at CAP, and Andrei Cherny, president and co-founder of Democracy, will deliver opening remarks. A panel discussion will follow, featuring Neera Tanden, president of CAP; Bruce Bartlett, columnist for The Fiscal Times and a regular contributor to The New York Times’s Economix blog; and Eric Liu, author and former White House speechwriter and deputy domestic policy adviser to President Clinton. Michael Tomasky of Democracy will moderate.
