Saudi foreign minister calls on U.N. Security Council for emergency meeting on Syria

August 21, 2013

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal today called upon the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency meeting on Syria following reports of alleged gas attacks on the Syrian people.

"We and the world are shocked of this humanitarian and horrible massacre in a number of Syrian cities by using chemical weapons which are forbidden internationally and resulted in the killing of hundreds of innocent civilians, mostly women and children," said Prince Saud.

Prince Saud stated that it is now time for the U.N. Security Council to assume its responsibilities, overcome the differences among its members and regain the confidence of the international community through holding an immediate meeting to put an end to this human tragedy.  He added that Saudi Arabia calls on the EU foreign ministers who are holding an emergency meeting in Brussels to make this humanitarian tragedy a base of their discussions.
