The IPCC plays a key role in ensuring public confidence in policing in England and Wales. Operating under intense public and media scrutiny in what can be a highly adversarial and emotionally charged environment, we investigate serious allegations against the police, including corruption, deaths, serious injuries and other police misconduct.

This is a crucial time for the IPCC. In February the Home Secretary signalled her intention to transfer resources from police forces to the IPCC to enable us to deal with all serious and sensitive allegations involving the police. We are therefore facing the prospect of significant expansion from 2014.

In addition, we are currently conducting a major investigation into the aftermath of the tragic events at Hillsborough in 1989. This is the biggest investigation that the IPCC has ever undertaken.

Commissioners

We are seeking to recruit two operational Commissioners at this exciting and challenging time. Commissioners provide independent oversight of investigations and lead work to improve complaints handling and learning in police forces. These are demanding full-time roles. Candidates will need exceptional judgment, independence of mind and the ability to assimilate complex information and provide constructive challenge and fresh thinking. Commissioners also work with the Chair and the Chief Executive to ensure robust governance of the IPCC.

Non-Executive Commissioner

We are seeking a Non-Executive Commissioner to strengthen governance oversight at a crucial time in the IPCC’s development. We are seeking an exceptional individual who can bring experience of good customer service, probably in a commercial setting, to help guide our work and approach and who has substantial board experience.
