I’ve never been mis-diagnosed by Dr. Troy Aikman myself, nor has he ever poisoned me, taken my spleen out when he was supposed to remove my appendix, or accidentally told a coroner I was dead.
Still, even though we know that Dr. Aikman isn’t infallible — he speculated last Sunday that Brandon Meriweather’s season might be over, while the safety wound up practicing within a few days — I wanted to quote his latest thoughts on Robert Griffin III.
Aikman was asked during some sort of Sporting News video interview whether he believes the knee brace is getting in RGIII’s way.
“Well, I think the knee’s getting in the way, first and foremost,” Aikman said. “I don’t see how the knee could be healthy. I mean, he will tell you that he’s 100 percent — I don’t know how that could possibly be true. How limited is he? It’s hard to really say. As someone who wore a knee brace, I know how cumbersome that can be, and it’s restrictive as far as your mobility. Even for someone like myself who really wasn’t all that mobile, it still kept me from being able to do certain things.
“And now you consider the fact that RGIII is obviously a very athletic, mobile guy. We haven’t seen the athleticism from him that we saw last year and that we were expecting. I don’t think it’s so much the knee brace; I just think the knee isn’t completely healed. And I don’t know -– I said it during our broadcast last week — I don’t know that we’ll ever see the same guy that we saw last year. And if we don’t, that’s fine. He can still go on and be a great player, he’s a guy that can certainly throw the football. But I think there’s a lot of things that are affecting him right now, and probably way down that list is the knee brace.”
Meanwhile, in a bit of commentary I might actually agree with, James Brown said he and his CBS Sports crew all agree on one thing about the quarterback.
“We understand that RGIII is a prestigious talent, and we understand that what he’s showed has got this town geeked beyond belief,” Brown told the Junkies on 106.7 The Fan Friday morning. ” However, tone it down just a bit, because everything is so RGIII-focused, and it’s more than just him personally. And I like the guy, I like his family — I just wish the organization would hold him back just a little bit. Because there’s so many players around the league right now who ain’t very happy about all that.”
