Inside Story
Grüner Veltliner is enjoying phenomenal success these days. Championed by sommeliers for its minerality and food-friendliness, the Austrian white has landed on the lists of adventurous restaurants nationwide. The 2,400 person village of Andau, near the Hungarian border, enjoys more sunny days and warmer weather than any other part of Austria, so it produces some of the ripest, most flavorful examples of Grüner Veltliner, and some exceptional reds to boot.

For fifty years now, the Winzerkeller Andau has provided its roughly 300 members with the opportunity to accomplish together that which would be impossible for them to achieve individually. The association pools the growers’ resources to farm, vinify and market the local wine. Since Austria’s entry into the European Union in 1995, the cooperative has spared no expense to modernize its harvesting equipment and state-of-the-art winemaking facilities.
In the Glass
This unoaked, refreshing white wine has zesty lemon blossom, white pepper and mint aromas and fresh pineapple, quince, lime kumquat and white grapefruit flavors with a clean, minerally finish.
At the Table
A white with both subtlety and complexity, this Austrian white is a good match for delicate foods including light seafood dishes and salads, even with green vegetables that perplex most wines. Try it with poached trout and asparagus, a wholesome caprese salad or pea soup with mint.
