Speed painting
Speed painting is a method of painting or illustration, primarily a digital art form. It is not so much about the absolute speed or a limited time budget, as it is about the techniques involved, which were result of having to work time efficiently in a production oriented environment. Techniques used quite often in this context are custom brushes, custom shapes or the lasso tool - all useful to quickly block out masses and shapes. Lighting is often simplified taking advantage of atmospheric perspective. Details are just loosely and selectivly indicated. Photo textures can be added to the painting as well. Very common with speedpainting is that the artist starts out with no or only a very rough idea about where to take the painting. Subject matter evolves from a partly chaotic process. Speed Painting is widely used amongst Concept Artists, usually in the very early stages of production or as a warm-up exercise.
