In Yoruba land, when a person is born at a certain age, that person is tattooed. Now, i am just scratching the surface of a deep rich history so pardon me. This beautiful woman i met in Osun State allowed me take pictures of her tattoos that were given to her years ago. A young soul who was trying to translate what she was saying to me asked asked her the meaning of her tattoo she didn’t say. Maybe she doesn’t want me to know or maybe it is something you cannot properly let someone else translate. I respect that silence. At that moment, i wish i had listened to my grandfather and learned more Yoruba when i had the chance. She blessed me as i left and although i didn’t buy Agidi or Agege bread, i decided to reward her for spending sometime with a curious young confused talkative woman. || Ijeoma.

Q&A With Sugata Roy, UNICEF India (Tamil Nadu & Kerala)
Communication Specialist, Chennai

image

What does the average working day look like for a Communication Specialist?

For a Communication Specialist an average working day varies between 8 to 10 hours of work.  The day starts with tight deadlines, monitoring media stories on children, coordinating with media agencies, discussing with sectoral colleagues on advocacy and communication, working on press releases, media briefs, documenting best practices stories, and negotiating with government counterparts and civil society organizations on various programmes. All the positive energy at the workplace enhances my performance to meet all my deadlines.

Describe your job in 3 words?

Challenging, stimulating, and exciting.

What is the most memorable place you’ve traveled with UNICEF?

In my time working for UNICEF, I’ve travelled to memorable and certainly hard-to-reach areas in Jharkhand, India. These areas are rich flora, fauna and natural mineral resources but inhabited by poor, marginalized, vulnerable and neglected tribes.

What do you miss most about being a kid?

I will always miss the story-telling sessions with my father.

سندباد || Sindibad: One of the six characters of the ‘Syria Stories’ Project

I chose the name Sindibad to hide my real identity. I currently reside with my wife and four children in the Kilis Turkish refugee camp, and I try my best to help Syrian refugees, not only in this camp but also in others. Inside me, is an unmoving conviction that I will someday return, with my family, back home.
