Most of the day’s speakers qualify for AARP membership — or should start to get mailers soon.  That’s a stark contrast to the age of speakers 50 years ago at the March.

Phil Agnew, who is 28, is the founder of the Dream Defenders, a group that has pointedly adopted the civil rights era approach to nonviolent protest as their template. The Dream Defenders made headlines for their activism in Florida following the Trayvon Martin shooting, and Agnew had been invited to Wednesday’s commemoration to speak — just ahead of Reverend Al Sharpton, in fact.

But that’s not how it went down on Wednesday.

As it turns out, this young civil rights leader did not get to speak at the remembrance of the March on Washington as planned.  Read more about this ironic story

Do you think young people care about civil rights and serving as leaders of change?

Why do you think so few young people were featured on the anniversary?

Students Speak Out: Leslie Beltran (by KERAPublicMedia)

[Leslie] got pregnant at 15 and dropped out…

But [she] quickly realized that working fulltime to provide for her son – without a high school diploma – wouldn’t provide the kind of  life or set the kind of example she wanted. After three years away, she’s back in class… Leslie plans to graduate, go on to college and become a nurse

An inspiring clip for all students to see!

The playground is such an important place during childhood.  What skills, lessons, or experiences from your favorite playground as a kid are still helping you today?

#Respect by Citizen U

Last week, we had the honor of attending the premiere of #RESPECT at the Citizen U Teen Leaders Graduation Celebration.  To say we were impressed with these students and their accomplishments is a HUGE understatement.  Awesome job on this video media production!!!

This is a public service announcement to every young person about creating respectful, responsible relationships! Thank you to Citizen U and the Family Violence Prevention Council of Broome County.

"You can’t be what you can’t see."
Marie Wilson, Founding President of The White House Project

"The average American child is spending over ten hours engaging with media every day.  Which wouldn’t be such a bad thing, if media represented a diversity of values, cultures, people and ideas."

The article goes on to state that “the most predominant message we are fed is this: The most valuable thing about a woman is her looks.”  Do you agree?  How does this common message effect teenagers: girls and boys?

Read more from this article on how to help students to be media literate and teach them how to seek our alternative messages.

Some of our Youth Voice-ers are heading into this chapter next week — Exciting and scary all at the same time!

To this article, your friends at WSKG add:  Don’t go home too often.  Stay on campus (especially for the first 4 weekends), walk down a different hallway every time you go to your room, spend Saturdays in the library, push through homesickness or loneliness — You will be glad you did years later when you realize you met some life-long friends during that first week.

Don’t worry.  You got this!

August 28, 2013 marks 50 years since the historic March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.’s "I Have a Dream" speech.  As part of that series, we interviewed local community members who attended and played active roles in the march. Many locals were young when the march happened, but they remember it well.
We started to wonder: what do today’s kids think about an event that happened 50 years ago, long before they were born?

How a Look at Your Gmail Reveals the Power of Metadata
From NPR’s Larry Abramson

"…even without identifying information attached to these communications, the patterns he sees in metadata are unique. Few people have the exact same communications pattern with my girlfriend, my son, and with my close friends. So that information could potentially be used to identify me."

This puts Mom and Dad knowing your email password into a different perspective…

College students can find free textbooks via university libraries or sites such as Project Gutenberg.  Students in need of Classic Literature texts seem to have the best luck finding free options.

We say every little bit helps, especially given these estimates!

Arizona State University estimates full-time students will spend $1,000 on books this school year. Ohio State University suggests students budget nearly $1,250 for books and supplies, and the University of Southern California bumps that figure up to $1,500 for full-time undergrads.

FINDING ALTERNATIVES FOR TROUBLED TEENS IN BROOME COUNTY

Today, 18-year-old Ocasio says there are gangs across Binghamton, but mostly on the West Side. Fights break out often. Sometimes they’re started for old reasons like family problems or conflicts started in school and sometimes it’s new reasons like insults posted on Facebook.

Gangs are not just in the movies for some Greater Binghamton residents. The 2009 National Gang Threat Assessment estimated up to 499 gang members resided in Broome County.
Not all of us were aware that gangs were in our towns.  Do you know if this is a challenge in your area?  Read more about the support that “saves” some teens!
