When hope seems lost, look for helpers and heroes who risk everything for the good. A deadly school shooting Monday at Sparks Middle School east of Reno, Nev., left two dead and two wounded. The school’s beloved math teacher and soccer coach, Michael Landsberry, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was killed trying to intervene. The 13-year old gunman, who used a semi-automatic handgun owned by his parents, said to students in the classroom that they had ruined his life, and now he was going to ruin theirs, before firing and injuring two students. Landsberry was killed after trying to persuade the boy to give up the gun.

Is that a wombat at the door? Yes! Matthew Hill and his family rescued Ruby the baby wombat after her mother was found by the side of an Australian road. Ruby appears in this video to have adapted well to her new human family. She shortly discovered the cat flap built into the front door as an easy way to get inside and out. Apparently, Ruby also requires a lot of baths, as she tends to get dirty after playing outside. Which is probably not surprising, as wombats are diggers and like to make burrows. They can also be kept as pets, but if you decide you want one—and who wouldn’t?—keep in mind they can grow from cute babies to hard-to-handle adults. Credit: Matt Hill.

Surfer Erica Henderson did the opposite of what many wave riders would do in her position after spotting a shark fin in the rippling tide: She went straight after it. “I would guess that the shark was at least seven feet in size,” Henderson said, though in the video it looks like the creature could easily serve as an understudy in Jaws. As soon as she saw the fin, on her board in the California surf, “I reached for my camera, stuck it in the water and started paddling towards the shark in hopes to get it on film.” Probably a good idea, as the world’s population of sharks continues to plummet due to overharvesting to make soup. Off-camera, this man’s 6-year-old daughter, having had a rough day, was throwing a major tantrum in her room for about an hour. To his son’s apparent delight, he started lip-synching along to it. Wonder what happened when she later saw this video? Credit: Kathy Sterner. Would this kind of tantrum-stopping tactic work in your house, face-to-face, or make it worse?

She bends it like Beckham—or at least like he used to. Stephanie Roche, a striker who has played for the Republic of Ireland, scored an amazing goal in this match, bringing the ball under control with a defender nearby, then cutting loose with a volley that left the goalie no chance. Her team, Peamount United, beat Wexford Youths 6-1 in the match. The video of Roche’s goal has gone viral; she talks about it here with the Irish Daily Star. Credit: Eileen Gleeson.

We’re not sure if Spoon, a St.Bernard/Bernese Mountain Dog cross-breed, loves to eat baby carrots or just treat them as toys. Her owners often reward her with microcarrots for good behavior, and when she gets them, she seems to ignore her normal dog toys in favor of a game of “gum the carrot.” Credit: iHartLaRoo.
