Land mines kill guards in Kurdistan

Four Revolutionary Guards were killed by exploding land mines in the mountainous regions of Kurdistan province and another three were injured.

ISNA reports that the IRGC chief said four members were killed during engineering operations in the Kamyaran region.

Land mines from the eight-year Iran-Iraq War in the ‘80s often claim the lives of people in the region or result in serious injuries.

Iran is amongst the top five countries with the most landmines in the world. These landmines are inmostly in Western provinces of Kurdistan, Western Azerbaijan, Kermanshahan and Khuzestan.

Official reports indicate that Iraq planted over 16 million landmines in a 42,000 kilometres square area during the eigth-year war with Iran and these landmines continue compromising agricultural and oil development in the region.
