x 2008 Torre Quarto Don Marcello PugliaVarietyRed BlendVintage2008StyleSpicyRegion / CountryPuglia, ItalyPuglia’s rustic reds have been rediscovered—and redefined—by a new generation of ambitious vintners, like the Cirillo Farrusi family of Torre Quarto.Inside StoryTorre Quarto is one of the oldest wineries in Puglia, a grand estate sprawling across thousands of acres that was owned for generations by the French dukes of La Rochefoucauld. The property’s grand cellars, vineyards, olive groves and winery, then called Quarto Ducale, passed into the hands of the Cirillo Farrusi family in 1931. The Cirillo Farrusis became pioneers in quality wine from Puglia, exporting their offerings to France and beyond.Today Torre Quarto is led by Stefano Cirillo Farrusi, who has renovated the facilities, introduced modern equipment and brought the wines to international standards of quality. The Don Marcello cuvée blends Puglia’s rustic Uva di Troia grape—a variety that yields muscular red wines high in tannin—with lushly fruity Primitivo (Zinfandel’s Italian sibling) and a touch of juicy Sangiovese. The result is a red that’s rustic yet refined, and a terrific example of contemporary Puglian wine.In the GlassThere’s a sunny, ripe warmth to this red’s aromas, redolent of spiced plums, cedar and cinnamon. Its rich, lush mulberry and plum flavors stay fresh and food-friendly, thanks to juicy acidity. At the TableThe intensity of the Torre Quarto’s plum and spice flavors make it a terrific choice to pair with rich ragus, braised or roasted meats and boldlyflavored barbecue dishes.Recipe PairingPork Ragu for a CrowdThis is relatively light for a ragu, which refers to a meat sauce that is thick and full-bodied. The pork shoulder and mild Italian sausage cook in the sauce itself.See the recipeAdditional PairingsGrilling: Five-Spice Smoked Short Ribs with Shanghai Barbecue SauceHealthy: Asian Sloppy JoesRecently Viewed:IMGOther Wines You May Enjoy:IMGIMGIMG ©2013 The Washington Post and ©2013 Global Wine Company, Inc, San Rafael, CA.
