Digital Edition FAQs

Last updated July 19, 2013.

Answers to many common questions about our digital editions are below. If you need more help, please e-mail or call our customer support center at 800-967-2082.

For Kindle Fire questions, please call Amazon directly at 866-749-7771.

Q: How do I get the The New Yorker on my device?

A: You can purchase a print subscription that includes digital access, or buy a digital-only subscription directly from the App Store (for iPad), Google Play magazine store, Amazon (for Kindle Fire), BN.com (for NOOK Tablet), or through Next Issue Media (for most Android tablets and Windows 8 desktops and tablets).

Q: Does my subscription on my Nook Color/Tablet, Amazon Kindle Fire, or Android device through Next Issue allow me to read The New Yorker on my iPhone?

A: If you purchased a subscription directly from Barnes & Noble or Next Issue, your subscription is not available on the iPhone at this time. If you subscribed directly from Amazon on the Kindle Fire, you may have access if you entered an e-mail and created a password for additional benefits when you purchased your subscription. If you need assistance, please contact us.

Q: How can I use my current print subscription to get access on my device?

A: It varies by device. Please see our digital access instructions, and contact us if you need more help.

Q: I have a newyorker.com username and password, but I don’t remember my password. Can I reset it?

A: Yes, you can reset it here. If you’re still having password trouble, please contact us at 800-967-2082.

Q: My app keeps crashing. What can I do?

A: We’re sorry to hear that some users are experiencing crashing and download problems. For best performance, please shut down any other apps running in the background. If problems persist, please force-quit the app, then re-open it. If you're still having trouble, try turning your device off and then turning it back on. You can also try deleting and re-installing the app. And if none of that works, please let us know: Send us a note, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Q: Do I have to be online to read a digital edition of The New Yorker?

A: No. All our digital editions are designed for reading offline once issues have downloaded. An internet connection is required for some features, however, and high bandwidth (Wi-Fi) is recommended.

Q: I live in Canada and I am having trouble getting access to the iPad using my print subscription information. Can you help?

A: If you are trying to authenticate using your address instead of your account number, please make sure to enter your postal code without any spaces.

Q: Can I get back issues on my device?

A: Issues published prior to our launch date on each device are not available on that device. Our first iPad issue was October 4, 2010; our first Kindle Fire issue was November 14, 2011; our first Nook Color/Tablet issue was December 12, 2011; our first iPhone issue was August 13 & 20, 2012; and our first issue available on Google Play is April 22, 2013. Through Next Issue, you can read issues published in January 2012 or later on iPad and Android, and April 2013 or later on Windows 8. Try our archive for digital access to everything published since 1925.

Q: What’s the difference between the Web-based archive and digital editions of The New Yorker on other platforms?

A: The New Yorkers digital editions are full versions of the magazine optimized for reading on a device, and include bonus content such as audio, video, slide shows, and extra cartoons. The archive is a page-by-page facsimile of the print edition of The New Yorker and does not include any bonus material. Print-and-digital subscribers can access the archive (back to 1925) at no extra charge. Archive issues can be read via a browser on desktop computers, laptops, or tablets.
