Capital Weather Gang: March 28, 2010 - April 3, 2010
Forecast: Weekend weather to wow us
It's a simple, straight forward, and sublime forecast: sunny 70s today, tomorrow, and right on into Monday. This is the kind of weather that's more common in San Diego, Ca., giving it the reputation as having the near-ideal climate. How long will this southern California-style weather last here? I can say at least through mid-week, but don't count on it forever. This month is known for its mood swings around here. As I wrote two years ago, April weather can be both amazing and appalling.

Temperatures by the end of the game will just be getting down to around the average daytime high for this time of year. A mild evening indeed, though cool enough for a jacket.

A cherry blossom bird's-eye view
I had a unique opportunity to view Washington's world-famous cherry blossoms from above on Thursday afternoon. As I looked down from my flight approaching Reagan National Airport, I saw the beauty of the blossoms on a larger scale than most get to witness.

Forecast: Gorgeous string of near-perfect days
It really doesn't get much better than this in the nation's capital. I mean, not only is it sunny and warm, but the marvelous weather coincides with the Easter holiday, bursting cherry blossoms, and the first home games for the Nats and D.C. United. The low-humidity warmth should be perfect for just about anything, be it a bbq, patio party, frisbee game or walk on the Mall. Get out and enjoy. With some sunscreen on hand too, please.

* Fantastic weather through weekend: Full Forecast * For many years, Reagan National Airport's snow totals have been questioned and often criticized for under-representing the Washington area. Forecast: Beautiful, warm sunshine into Monday
What a great spring weekend this will be! Start it early if you can. The only people that might lodge a complaint are the kite flyers for the lack of wind and allergy-sufferers. Otherwise, it is prime blossom-viewing and picnic in the park time. Please don't forget the sunscreen. We're looking to cross the 80 degree mark for the first time since October 9 and only fall a few degrees short of record highs (87-89) this weekend. If we manage to find clouds in the sky it probably won't be until Easter Sunday and those will be just enough to make for nicer pictures.

Back-door cold fronts and historic weather
Meet Paul Yeager, meteorologist and editor, who earlier this month published the book Weather Whys: Facts, Myths, and Oddities. The book offers a treasure trove of short weather vignettes, covering weather folklore, weird phenomena and weather history. I invited Paul to blog about a couple topics in his book relating to Washington, D.C. weather. Here's what he had to share with us...

Forecast: Perfect time for superb spring stretch
An awesome stretch of weather begins today and the timing couldn't be better: Cherry blossoms are reaching full bloom, Easter egg hunts await, and the Nationals and D.C. United are about to open their home schedules. Get your sunscreen and, if you need it, allergy medicine ready to go. Spectacular spring conditions start to emerge today, and are here in full force (at times a little summery even) tomorrow through the weekend.

The first March without a freeze
After our uber-wintry December, January, and February -- March has been notably tame. Remarkably, when the clock strikes midnight Wednesday night (Thursday morning), the entire month will have passed with the mercury failing to drop below 33 degrees at Reagan National (DCA, Washington, D.C's official observing station). When was the last time this happened? There has never been a March where the temperature has failed to reach freezing in Washington, D.C. -- in nearly 140 years of record-keeping.

Forecast: Some sun today; warmth coming
A slow-moving, intensifying coastal storm will trek towards the Northeast today and tomorrow. It will throw lots of moisture our way in the form of clouds and a chance of showers. Unfortunately, it will also generate gusty winds and pull down colder air. But this low will depart later tonight and open the door to a beautiful setup for the late week and upcoming holiday weekend.

Forecast: Awful start, awesome end to week
Let's not beat around the bush: the next two days will be pretty lousy -- unless you happen to enjoy 50s and rain. But beginning Wednesday, the weather will get better and better. We enter a dry stretch and the warmest air of 2010 will arrive. By Easter weekend, 80 degrees will be a legitimate possibility.

Forecast: Rain moving in, heavy at times tonight
Little remains to remind us of those glorious 70s that we experienced last week. Yesterday featured the sun but was decidedly chilly, and today will begin to warm but substantial dampness will sour the mood at times for the next couple of days. Fear not though, once we make it through this latest storm, we'll quickly warm up. Temperatures begin climbing on Wednesday and by week's end, we should see the 70s once again.
