Boston College men's basketball coach Steve Donahue secured his first verbal commitment for 2014 in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ point guard Matt Farrell. The 6-foot-1, 170 pound guard from New Jersey held scholarship offers from more than 20 schools including Boston University, Dartmouth, Davidson, Monmouth and William & Mary.

(Commitment video via shoresportsnetwork.com)

Farrell chooses the Eagles over Dartmouth and Monmouth, the other finalists for his services.

"Matt is a highly skilled point guard who can shoot it and has a great feel for the game," Point Pleasant Beach coach Nick Catania told SNY.tv. "He is super quick with the ball and makes his teammates around him better.

"However, the reason he will succeed at Boston College is because of his competitive spirit. He hates to lose."

Last season, Farrell averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, 4.2 steals and 3.0 rebounds a game en route to Point Pleasant's first state title in school history. He added 23 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds in the Tournament of Champions game vs. Atlantic City, a double OT loss that nearly saw Point Pleasant knock off the perennial power.

Farrell is the first commit in the 2014 class and could be a big one, depending on whether reigning ACC Rookie of the Year Olivier Hanlan returns for his junior season. Donahue was also in pursuit of Farrell's Point Pleasant teammate, three-star power forward Dominique Uhl. Though Uhl visited Boston College back in September, the 6-foot-7, transfer from Germany verbally committed to play at Iowa last week.

Welcome to the Heights, Matt!

Joseph Gravellese: While BU beating up on Wisconsin on Saturday night takes the tiniest bit of luster off of BC's 9-2 win over the "was #2, but not for long" Wisconsin Badgers... it doesn't take much of the luster off. That was as complete a performance as I've ever seen from the Eagles at Conte Forum. A complete masterpiece from start to finish -- and a game that changes the conversation about BC hockey at this point in the season.

Grant Salzano: It does change the conversation, but it's a subtle change -- now, I think, we're talking about "are these freshmen really this good and are we really this deep?" rather than "are the freshmen going to live up to the hype?"

The 13 players to score a goal in the last two games has to be a record. It absolutely has to, no?

JG: If it's not, I'd be surprised. I think what's most exciting about this is that Arnold and Gaudreau are united as a veteran-laden, savvy, and dangerous first line, without having to worry about not having scoring options on other lines.

That's just a matchup nightmare, even for the best teams. With Minnesota having last change this coming weekend, it will be interesting to see if they match up specifically against the Gaudreau line... or if they determine that trying to play that game against BC isn't worth it when they're coming at you with three lines who can score.

Actually, four lines, I should say, since Michael Sit scored his first career goal on Friday night to put a cherry on top of the rout.

GS: The thing that gets me is how remarkably similar Cangelosi is to Gaudreau. He is going to have a monster year.

He's small, quick, fast, fast, and fast. And an incredible puck handler.

JG: That was some kind of shift he had when he scored the two goals. Absolutely electric.

Cangelosi being on a line with Kevin Hayes has been excellent for both of them. Hayes has been immense so far and was a real playmaker on Friday night. He also has finishing ability that should help Cangelosi be a sparkplug offensively; having another creative freshman in Fitzgerald on that line could make them a fun one to watch.

GS: It appears York will be going straight-rotation with the goaltenders for the time being, which would mean first Demko and then Billett this weekend. Any issues with this?

JG: No. Especially now that they both have wins under their belts. Conrad's assessment of Billett on Friday was accurate; someone asked how Billett looked, and Conrad said "bored, mostly." You couldn't make a fair judgement based on that game.

I suspect if they both play against Minnesota, both will be tested.

GS: Yes, I agree. No need to make any big decision in goalies yet. Plus it's kind of nice having the luxury if keeping the guys fresh.

Poor Billett, he really could have taken a nap against Wisconsin if he wanted to.

I'm sure he's not complaining.

JG: With Sit scoring on Friday night, safe to say the fourth line has earned its place for next weekend, or do you expect changes?

I'm still on board with wanting to see Spiro play. But I'm predicting we will see the same lineup on Friday night, but swap in Demko for Billett.

GS: I'm at the point where I just throw up my hands and say "whatever." Everyone is contributing, so I think we'll be okay with whoever gets thrown out there.

I have to say I would like to be Spiro though, if I'm being honest.

JG: The biggest lineup shift that has made a difference so far has been putting both Santini and Savage into the lineup, which we didn't see in Michigan. Those two guys have really added a lot to the blue line for BC, offensively and defensively. Santini had another nice play on Friday for an assist, and Savage got on the board with a goal. But they aren't just puck movers, they're physical. That's something that was missing on the blue line for the most part last year and it's been a huge help.

Minnesota stayed unbeaten this weekend wth a sweep of Bemidji State, and was rewarded with the #1 ranking in the new poll that just dropped on Monday. BC is #5.

UMass-Lowell has tumbled almost completely out of the top 20 to 18th after being swept by Quinnipiac. It means nothing at this point in the season, but that is quite the impressive fall.

GS: Those rankings seem pretty accurate. What an opportunity for BC to go into the #1 team's arena for two games. No one is expecting BC to sweep, but boy what a statement that would be if they did.

And does anyone have nearly as difficult a schedule as BC to start the year? There can't possibly be anyone close to us in SOS -- #12, #16, #2, #1, #1... Uncle!

Even our opponent after Minnesota, Northeastern, cracked the USCHO Top 20.

But the chances of them staying there long term: Poor.

JG: This is definitely one of the toughest schedules I can remember any team having to start the season and the RPI boost from having such a strong strength of schedule should persist for quite some time, especially if BC can at least get a split out in Minnesota. Things soften up considerably on the nonconference front after this series, but still.

Minnesota is The Real Deal. They were The Real Deal last year, as our team found out all too dramatically in that rout last season in Minnesota. They're loaded all over the place and it will be a tough challenge for BC's young defense on the Olympic-sized ice surface.

GS: Sure will be. A sweep would be a great weekend. The high we're on right now from trucking Wisconsin will probably fade a little bit with a split, but that would still be a good result.

Having said that... Man, a sweep would be incredible for our pairwise down the road, particularly with how much the out-of-conference strength of schedule drops after this weekend.

JG: I'm going to disagree slightly. I think a split would maintain the positive vibes from last week and ensure a bevy of confidence going into conference play.

As long as one of the games isn't a repeat of last year's fiasco.

GS: What fiasco

JG: I see what you did there.

Last year in Minnesota really was the perfect storm of exposing how thin and weak our defense was. That situation only managed to repeat itself in several other big games, but Minnesota's speed, skill, bloodthirsty home crowd and revenge factor added up to it being the biggest exposure. Needless to say, this will be an instructive weekend.

And a televised one!

GS: Twice!

I am very excited. I love playing the Gophers. Usually after the game I hate them for a little bit, but I eventually come around.

JG: Gopher fans are probably going to hate us after the article I post midweek (teaser!) but it's all in fun. I love watching them play too and I can't wait for their return trip to Conte. Although given that it's Minnesota, expect them to hold off on this for as long as possible.

I should point out that Mariucci Arena is by far my favorite place I've ever gone to see an away sporting event. Just... mecca, if you're a hockey fan. If you're going out there this weekend: I'm jealous. Have an amazing time.

GS: Ditto. What an amazing venue.

Bite me, Wisco/NoDak elitists.

The NCAA has finally ruled on the Miami/Nevin Shapiro scandal, more than two years after allegations surfaced that a booster provided impermissible benefits to members of the Hurricanes football and basketball programs. The football program will not receive a bowl ban but will lose nine total scholarships over the next three years as part of the penalties handed down by the NCAA. The basketball program will also lose three scholarships and the entire athletic program has been placed on three years' probation.

The decision not to impose further postseason bowl bans means the 7th ranked Hurricanes will be eligible for a bowl game this season. The program self-imposed a two-year bowl ban that forced Miami miss two bowl games and last year's ACC Championship Game. The NCAA's Committee on Infractions "acknowledged and accepted the extensive and significant self-imposed penalties by the university," so Miami was wise to stay home the past two years. While the NCAA found that the university lacked "institutional control," Miami will not appeal the penalties, meaning we can put this story to rest.

The loss of scholarships amounts to nothing more than a slap on the rest, as this should not impact Miami's recruiting in any way. The Hurricanes are recruiting well in 2014 and are poised to haul in another top-10 class. The NCAA probably wanted to come down harder on the football program, but after a series of missteps in this case, including one that led to the NCAA firing its own vice president of enforcement, the organization lost a whole lot of leverage to levy harsher penalties.

With the penalties as light as they were, it's curious why it took so long to reach a settlement in this case. The NCAA could have just as easily gotten back out in front of this story by announcing the punishment in the offseason. The school would have accepted a similar punishment months ago and the decision wouldn't have detracted from Miami's 6-0 start to the season.

Barring a chance meeting in the ACC Championship Game, with the ACC's new rotating cross-division schedule, Boston College won't play Miami again until the 2018 season. I wouldn't have expected the scholarship reductions to have any impact on Miami, but these penalties will be over long before the former Big East foes meet again on the gridiron. About the only real impact to BC is that Miami, already bowl eligible, will be part of the ACC's bowl lineup this season. In the unlikely event that the NCAA handed down further postseason bans, this would have freed up an additional spot in what is shaping up to be a rather crowded ACC bowl lineup.

Miami will also be eligible for the ACC Championship Game, leaving the door open for the conference to stage its dream Florida State vs. Miami title game, just nine years in the making. Knowing the conference's luck, however, it'll probably be Florida State vs. Virginia Tech, again.

Very little news to report on as the Eagles escaped Death Valley and a bye week with no injuries. Steve Addazio is going to stick with his usual crew as BC gets ready for the UNC Tar Heels.

Offense

QB
1. Chase Rettig (6-3, 206, Sr.)
2. Josh Bordner (6-4, 220, Jr.) OR Mike Marscovetra (6-4, 207, Sr.)

We know what we have with Chase Rettig and will have to live with that for the final half of the season. If he can prevent the big mistakes he is a serviceable quarterback, but we have seen him make those errors and they can be costly. If he utilizes the play action, and gets rid of the ball quickly if he gets in trouble he should be okay. UNC has the 91st passing defense in the country.

TB
1. Andre Williams (6-0, 227, Sr.)
2. Myles Willis (5-9, 187, Fr.)

Two of the lynchpins of the offense, Willis and Williams line up again as the top two backs against a UNC defense that has struggled mightily against the run. The Heels are 103rd in the country against the run, the Heels have only had success stopping the Hokies. Not like BC was going to change their system, but this could be a matchup that is heavily in the Eagles favor.

FB
1. Jake Sinkovec (6-4, 244, Sr.)
2. Bobby Wolford (6-2, 233, R-Fr.)

Nothing has changed here, which at this point isn't a surprise. Although the 2nd and 3rd receivers haven't been a factor the Eagles don't have much depth here. Looks like Marcus Grant is still hurt as he still hasn't made the two deep. Here's to hoping that one of them (not Alex Amidon) can get open this weekend.

Even without playing last week, Boston College managed to find its way into a few more bowl projections this week. Let's take a look at where each of the major college football websites project Boston College to be end up at the end of the season:

SB Nation: Independence Bowl vs. Vanderbilt

Only a few moves this week. SB Nation is now projecting BC to the Independence Bowl vs. Vanderbilt (was Music City Bowl vs. Auburn). Schlabach is projecting the same, a week after leaving Boston College out entirely. Finally, College Football News has now taken BC off the list. Not sure what changed in a week but CFN now has Maryland, N.C. State, Pitt, Duke and Georgia Tech IN out of the group of ACC teams yet to become bowl eligible.

As much as I would like to see Boston College take on RichRod in San Francisco, this isn't happening. BYU is just one win shy of becoming bowl eligible and has yet to face FCS Idaho State. The PAC-12 is expected to fulfill all of its bowl commitments this season.

North Carolina at least has a realistic chance to turn around the ACC's worst record during the back half of the season.

#7: Boston College is coming off a bye and that means they had an extra week to prepare for North Carolina.
The Noles have the most impressive win to date, 51-14 at No. 3 Clemson. The Tigers are not a bad team. In fact, Clemson is still a top-10 team. These two facts alone should make everybody reconsider what they believe about Florida State.

Did the Noles look sloppy at Boston College? At times, yes. But in their biggest game of the season, when people believed the spotlight would be too bright for Jameis Winston, they humiliated the preseason ACC favorite and made them look like an also-ran.

Giggidy.

It was the weekend that everyone from Boston College dreamed about last season. It was the night revolving around a coach who tried like hell to avoid being recognized for achieving the highest honor in his profession. It was the night where the term "In York We Trust" turned into "Thank You, Jerry" as a banner was unveiled at Conte Forum for head coach Jerry York becoming the winningest coach in college hockey history. After two previous attempts were derailed by God and Jerry's health, BC came together with a marquee opponent in the visitors' locker room in a celebration of Coach York and his trade.

The funny thing is that Jerry York Appreciation Night was completely upstaged by his team. BC scored four first period goals and jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second en route to a 9-2 destruction of the #2-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. It was an exhibition of Boston College's ceiling, even though the Badgers were shorthanded without junior goalie Joel Rumpel. And when the dust settled, so shell-shocked was Bucky that they went up the street on Saturday and got taken behind a woodshed again by BU.

A look at a beautiful night at Conte Forum:

The Good:

Offensive Awesomeness: On one of his shifts in the first period, Johnny Gaudreau got a breakaway on which he hit the post. He got the puck a few short moves later and got another breakaway on the same shift, beating Landon Peterson for the strike. This came after Austin Cangelosi had two goals already on the board and before Ian McCoshen made it 4-0, all before the end of the first period. After the end of the first frame, the top line of Gaudreau-Bill Arnold-Adam Gilmour had a goal and four assists between them

Some of the final stat totals were just flat out video game numbers: Gilmour finished with three assists and a +3; Gaudreau had an assist later in the game and finished with 1-2-3 numbers AND A +4 RATING. Arnold finished +3 with an assist. Cangelosi would go 2-1-3, Kevin Hayes had two first period assists then added a goal in the third, Ryan Fitzgerald had two assists. Heck, the only Eagles without points were Destry Straight, Isaac MacLeod, and Danny Linell.

Against Wisconsin and RPI, two teams expected to compete at the national level, BC has now outscored opponents 16-4. That's the equivalent of Florida State beating a team like Clemson, 51-14. I know, crazy to think that would happen, right? Wait...what? Umm... this is awkward.

Ian McCoshen and Michael Matheson: McCoshen scored the aforementioned fourth goal in the first period and added a secondary assist on the seventh goal scored by Michael Sit in the second period. But offense aside, the defensive pairing of McCoshen and Matheson finished a combined +13. McCoshen finished at +6, and Matheson set a new program record with a +7 That means, for those of you at home who don't understand the plus/minus, that they were on the board for six and seven more BC goals than Wisconsin goals. Some guys can't get that rating over the course of an entire season.

Jerry York: The night was about him from the start, and his team both took the spotlight away and enhanced the spotlight by thrashing one of the nation's elite hockey teams. In true Jerry York fashion, he chose to not focus on himself but focus on what his team was accomplishing. After the game, Jerry chose to focus on the accomplishments of his freshman class, players like Cangelosi and McCoshen. He talked about how he's enjoying how they're fitting in, and he stressed the evolution of the program with how players like Johnny Gaudreau and Kevin Hayes watched Pat Mullane and Steven Whitney. Now the younger guys are watching Johnny Hockey and Hayes. In York We Trust, and believe me, Jerry is the classiest and nicest guy in the nation, and he deserved this night more than anyone.

The Bad:

Power Play: Nine goals is an incredible amount. 49 shots was the most since BC peppered Northeastern with 50 back in 2010. But the power play was 0-for-5. Kind of splitting hairs, but at least it's going to give Jerry York something to work on this week.

Isaac MacLeod and Danny Linell: Lost in the destruction of the Badgers is that MacLeod and Linnell both finished -1. They also represented two of the three players without a point. It's hard to point to any real mistakes by the team when they were steamrolling that fast and that strong, but if you're a race car going 200 mph and there's a car going 150 mph, the one that's going 150 mph will appear in slow motion. It's just a matter of missing out on horsepower, right Ron Burgundy?

The Ugly:

The offense: Providence scored 10 against AIC. Call me when you guys hit double digits.

On Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced the game times and networks for the November 2 slate of games. Boston College's home game vs. Virginia Tech has drawn a noon kickoff and will be televised nationally by either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. A final decision on network will come by Sunday, October 27.

Not the greatest of start times for would-be tailgaters, but can't not like the national television coverage. I'm sure North Carolina and N.C. State fans would gladly swap start times and networks.
