Zanzibar President Alhaji Aboud Jumbe Mwinyi, made public his event of celebrating his 93rd birthday. The celebration was held at his son’s home in Zanzibar. “Some of you have been asking about the elderly man.

He is here to celebrate with you,” said Mr Mustapha Aboud Jumbe, at the function attended by several people led by the Zanzibar urban regional commissioner. The celebration included prayers for the ailing and aging retired leader who served as Zanzibar president between 1972 and 1984 before resigning. Jumbe, worked with the Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Nyerere to merge ASP and TANU parties forming Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in 1977.

Meanwhile, CUF plans a big rally to celebrate victory for retaining a seat in Pemba by-election after easily retaining a seat in Chambani last Sunday. The party is also planning a big rally in Matemwe, north of Unguja Island, the home of the second vice-president.

The Pemba Chambani Constituency seat by-election follows the death of MP Salim Hemed Khamis (62) on March 28, this year. The winning candidate, Yussuf Salim Hussein, garnered a respectable 2,708 (83.6%) votes for first place.

But the votes show a decrease compared to what CUF got in 2010 elections were the party won by more than 3,000 votes. Other candidates in the last Sunday by-elections were CCM’s Mathari Saharani Said (402 votes), CHADEMA‘s Ms Siti Ussi Shaibu (12), and ADC’s Mr Said Miraji Abdallaah (114).

CUF’s director for publicity and mass communication, Mr Salum Bimani said, “We are happy with the victory because this is a message that people still have trust in our party.” He said the celebration is scheduled for June 30, this year in Matemwe.
