This well-established annual award has built up a strong following over its 22-year history. Its coverage on BBC World News and bbc.com, bolstered by exposure on BBC Sport’s social media, provides advertisers with a multi-platform opportunity to reach a truly engaged and passionate African audience.
Players are nominated by leading African sports journalists. The BBC’s global audience of African football fans then vote for their favourite player by text message or online during November before the winner is announced on 2 December 2013.
Audience participation in the selection of the award-winner rose dramatically last year, with 215,000 votes being cast (up 100,000 from 2011). The winner of African Footballer of the Year 2012 was Zambia skipper Christopher Katongo.
