Although he missed out on winning a Gold Glove for an errorless season in center field, Denard Span was honored on Thursday with the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year award for the Nationals. In the annual award’s second season, Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Gerardo Parra were selected as the American League and National League winner, respectively. A player from each team, however, was also honored, and Span was selected as the Nationals’ best defender in 2013.

Span, 29, was the only everyday center fielder in baseball to post a spotless fielding percentage of 1.000 and commit no errors. He saved three more runs than the average defender and posted a 10.2 UZR score, third best among NL center fielders. He made such good reads and jumps that he was rarely caught out of position on a play, making it look effortless and rarely diving for balls. He also displayed tremendous range and an ability to make difficult, game-changing catches. In his first season in the NL, he established himself as one of the league’s best outfielders and one of the Nationals’ most consistent fielders.

The winners of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards, which were founded in 2012, are determined by using a formula that uses scouting information, sabermetric analysis and traditional statistics.
