If you’re hungry for a sniff of yesteryear, AAA says you may get it at the gas pump if you pull into one of the area service stations where prices have dipped below $3 per gallon.

The automobile club, which monitors gas prices locally and nationally, says there aren’t a great many pumps serving up fuel at that price, and that the regional average is at $3.25.

AAA says Virginia is home to some of the nation’s cheapest gas, pointing to Roanoke, where the average is $2.97 per gallon, Harrisonburg ($2.98), and Richmond and Fort Lee ($3).

“If this trend-line continues, it bodes well for consumers and for travelers who will travel 50 miles or more from home during Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said John B. Townsend II of AAA. “Consumers haven’t seen gasoline prices this cheap since 2010. Gasoline prices could be below $3 per gallon in more spots during the holidays.”

Townsend said gas prices usually plateau or hit their lowest point of the year around Thanksgiving each year.
