SOMETIMES AN IMAGE is so powerful visually, it feels almost inadequate to respond only verbally.
“Habibi,” the graphic novel released this week by the acclaimed Craig Thompson, has nearly 700 pages of such riveting images. And so mere words — or at least my mere words — seemed not enough to even try to convey just how intricate and ornate, lush and seductive, arabesque and sometimes knowingly grotesque this artistic epic is.
No, after reading “Habibi” (Pantheon) and listening to the award-winning cartoonist (2003’s “Blankets”) describe his elaborate process this month during Small Press Expo — at which he debuted the book on behalf of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund — it seemed only right to respond with pictures to one of the year’s best comic projects.
And so I broke out the brush pens — the tool Thompson used for his 2004 travel journal “Carnet de Voyage” — to humbly render this review:
