‘THOR: THE DARK WORLD’: Marvel sequel hammers world box office with $109.4M opening

BEFORE IT’S even landed on American shores, Thor’s sequel has hammered all competitors.

“Thor: The Dark World” won every overseas market it opened in this weekend en route to an eye-popping $109.4-million debut. The Disney/Marvel film opens in North America this Friday.

In 2011, the first Thor film in this franchise grossed more than $268-million in foreign markets — or nearly 60-percent of the movie’s total gross.

(The superhero sequel has yet to open in such major markets as China, Italy and Japan.)

“The Dark World” helped push Disney over the $2.3-billion overseas mark for 2013, THR reports — a studio record for foreign markets.

Next weekend, “Thor” will aim to topple this weekend’s domestic champ, the sci-fi “Ender’s Game” (Lionsgate/Summit), which grossed $28-million to knock off Paramount’s “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” ($20-million). Trailing them were two new films: CBS Films’ “Last Vegas” ($16.5-million) and Relativity’s “Free Birds” ($16.2-million).
