    Weather Journal: Sunny and Cool

Sunny and cool conditions ease Greater New York into the workweek and then linger through the dwindling days of October.

Surface high pressure builds into the region Monday through the middle part of the week, ensuring a continuation of this month’s dry weather. Monday’s temperatures hover near normal to slightly below normal levels for late October. Expect highs to rise to 60 in and around New York City and into the middle 50s in Trenton and Poughkeepsie.

Winds shift to the north and northeast in the afternoon as the area of high pressure moves into the mid-Atlantic region. Light winds and fewer clouds allow for significant radiational cooling on Monday night.

Weather Journal: Cool Temperatures With Sunshine

November temperatures occupy Greater New York this weekend, but an abundance of sunshine takes the edge off the extra cool conditions.

Strong high pressure building into the plains combines with low pressure over the North Atlantic to create a breezy and cold Friday. Skies remain mostly to partly sunny, with occasional passing clouds. Gusty winds at 10 to 15 mph will have Greater New Yorkers grasping at their hats and scarves; there’s no use protesting these blustery conditions because they’re settling in for the weekend.

Friday’s high temperatures will slowly creep into the lower 50s. Winds diminish some in the evening under mostly clear skies. Nighttime temperatures respond by dropping into the upper 20s well inland and the upper 30s and lower 40s elsewhere. As a result, frost advisories and freeze warnings are likely to continue through the weekend for the usual inland and valley counties.

    Weather Journal: Cold and Breezy

The cold air and breezy conditions that take hold in Greater New York on Thursday seem far better suited for late November than the second half of October.

A weak area of low pressure moves across the tri-state area on Thursday, prompting the day’s morning sunshine to slowly give way to afternoon clouds. A few isolated showers may pop up late in the day, but overall, dry weather is expected across the entire region.

Thursday’s high temperatures won’t be very high, rising only into the lower to middle 50s. A brisk northwest wind at nine to 15 mph, with stronger gusts possible, adds an extra shot of coolness to the day. These temperatures are unseasonable, but complement the National Weather Service’s current Winter Weather Awareness Week, which promotes cold weather education and safety.

Weather Journal: Break Out the Boots and Parkas

    Reuters

After the recent stretch of beautiful days, Wednesday’s dismal weather will have Greater New Yorkers shivering in their boots and parkas.

Early morning light rain develops into full-blown showers over the entire region by the middle of Wednesday morning. The heaviest rainfall is expected between noon and 2 p.m., with precipitation tapering off and eventually coming to an end late in the day.

To add to the day’s misery, the cold front that visited Greater New York on Tuesday left a mass of cool air in its wake. As a result, Wednesday’s high temperatures will range from around 50 in Poughkeepsie to 53 in Manhattan, about 10 degrees below normal, and a significant drop from the recent warm weather. A stiff northwest wind aids and abets the chilly temperatures, making for an all around raw day.

A misty morning gives way to clouds and mild temperatures on Wednesday in Greater New York.

An area of low pressure hangs out along the coast on Wednesday, while a weakening cold front approaches from the west. These systems will briefly curb the region’s abundant sunshine, but the gray skies won’t last much more than a day.

The tri-state area awakens to patchy fog and misty rain or drizzle on Wednesday. Morning fog and low cloud cover will burn off by 9 a.m., leaving the rest of the day partly to mostly cloudy. A few additional bands of showers may appear after 2 p.m. ahead of the cold front, but these will not last long and no measurable precipitation is expected.

    Weather Journal: Vibrant Blue Skies

Monday’s dry conditions and vibrant blue skies add up to perfect mid-October weather for Greater New York.

In addition to plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures around five degrees above normal take hold on Monday. Daytime highs will range from near 70 in New York City to the mid 60s in New Haven and eastern Long Island. Evening lows remain near normal, in the mid 50s for the five boroughs and in the upper 40s in most other areas.

A few clouds will be present, the result of a weakening cold front approaching from the west. While there’s a small chance of northeast New Jersey seeing scattered showers in the morning, no significant precipitation is expected on Monday, ensuring agreeable conditions for Columbus Day parade viewing in New York City and elsewhere in the tri-state area.

Weather Journal: A Rainy Weekend Ahead

    Getty

Rainy, cool weather continues across Greater New York on Friday and Saturday, but a dry Sunday may help salvage the weekend.

Friday’s high temperature won’t rise above 60, while a blustery wind from the northwest makes the day feel extra raw. There will be frequent periods of moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day and into the evening. There’s little chance of any part of the region staying dry on Friday, but like Thursday, coastal areas will bear the brunt of the foul weather. No flood advisories have been issued, but residents along the shore should be aware that seas will be rough and tides higher than usual.

Gloomy conditions stick around on Saturday as the nor’easter responsible for our stormy weather slowly churns up the East Coast.
Rain and drizzle won’t easily relent over the southern part of the region, keeping the daytime high close to 65 in northeast New Jersey and New York City. Northern areas will see less rain and cloudy skies, with a high temperature close to 70. Cloud cover prevents evening temperatures from falling below the middle and upper 50s.

Weather Journal: Rain Is On The Way

    Getty Images
Surfers ride the morning waves at Rockaway beach on Wednesday.

Greater New York enters several days of damp weather on Thursday as a coastal storm stalls out along the East Coast.

The first wave of precipitation moves north into the region on Thursday. The strong area of high pressure that is set up over the mid-Atlantic should make it difficult for the system to move into far northern zones. As a result, Orange County may escape a serious soaking during the day, but occasional rain and drizzle will move north by early evening.

With a 90% chance of rain in the forecast, the southern part of the region can expect rain showers throughout the day. Rain may be heavy at times; new precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch are possible. Areas south of New York will feel the brunt of the storm’s wind and rough seas.

    Weather Journal: Sweater Weather Returns

Wednesday’s partial sun and cooler weather heralds the return of sweater weather to Greater New York – and this time it’s here to stay.

Cooler temperatures did not stop distance swimmer Diana Nyad from attempting to swim for 48 hours straight, starting Tuesday, in a pool constructed in Herald Square to support victims of Hurricane Sandy.

It finally feels like October in the tri-state area, thanks to seasonable temperatures, waning daylight and the abundance of leaves littering the ground. Greater New Yorkers should get used to the chill in the air because it won’t disappear any time soon; Wednesday’s high temperatures will be slightly below normal and the rest of the workweek looks damp and gray.

On Wednesday, daytime highs reach the mid 60s in northeast New Jersey and across New York City’s five boroughs, with temperatures three to five degrees cooler along coastal Connecticut and on eastern Long Island. The day will be a bit breezy; winds shifted to the northeast overnight Tuesday and increase in intensity through Wednesday afternoon, producing gusts between 10 and 15 mph.

Weather Journal: A Return to Fall Conditions on Tuesday

    Getty
A woman uses her purse to guard against heavy rain on Monday.

Tuesday’s clear skies and pleasant weather will help quickly fade memories of the gray and stormy start to New York’s work week.

A large area of surface high pressure in builds in behind Monday’s cold front, setting Tuesday up to be sunny and dry. With Monday afternoon’s heavy rain, winds and tornado watch came an end to the tri-state area’s weeks of unseasonably warm weather. High temperatures will drop between five and 10 degrees across the region on Tuesday and are not likely to climb out of the 60s again this week. Despite the cooler temperatures, the Tuesday will feature beautiful and much less humid conditions, helping New Yorkers remember what fall feels like.
