1854 witnessed the birth of Egypt's telecommunications industry.
The first telegraph line connecting Cairo and Alexandria was inaugurated early in 1854, forming the company that was later to become Telecom Egypt.
Ferdinand de Lesseps granted the concession to build the Suez Canal to Said Pasha.
Thomas Watson, the assistant of Alexander Bell (inventor of the Telephone) was born on Jan 18th.
George Eastman, inventor of the Kodak Camera was born on July 12th.
Elisha Graves Otis launched his Safety Elevator on May 30th. |

Cairo & Alexandria talk to each other. The first telephone line was installed between Cairo and Alexandria.
The Royal cache of 50 Mummies was discovered in Deir el Bahari, Thebes. These included the remains of Ramsis II and Seti I.
The first electrical tram was opened in Germany on May 16th.
The Edison Electric Company switched on the 1st lighting system on Sep 4th serving 85 customers.
Picasso, the great Spanish painter was born on Oct 25th.

The Egyptian Government purchased the Eastern Telephone Company for 755,000 L.E. and created the Telephone & Telegraph Authority, a forerunner of Telecom Egypt.
Gamal Abdel Nasser was born in Alexandria on Jan 15th . The 1st World War ended after 4 years on Nov 11th.
A virulent Influenza epidemic claimed over 20 million victims globally before disappearing.
Nelson Mandela, the human rights activist and 1st black president of South Africa was born.
In Russia, Trotsky's Bolshevic party executed the last Tzar, Nicholas II, his wife, son and 4 daughters.

The first Car-phone Service was launched in Egypt by Arento (Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecommunications Organisation), now known as Telecom Egypt.
Anwar Sadat visited USA shifting Egyptian foreign policy which had courted favor from the Soviet Union for the previous 20 years.
The much beloved Egyptian singer Om Kolthom died.
The Suez Canal reopened after 8 years of being closed to international shipping.
American forces withdrew from Vietnam on Apr 29th ending the war which had started in 1954.

With a capacity of 120 channels, the first earth station, satellite to the rest of the world, was opened in Maadi.
The Arab League was moved from Cairo to Tunisia after The Camp David Peace Agreement.
The famous Egyptian Novelist Youssef Al Sibai died in Cyprus. |

Telecom Egypt's new brand exploded into the market with a new look and a new approach to business. The award winning campaign was aired throughout the Holy month of Ramadan.
People asked why a monopoly needs to advertise and we replied that as competition enters the market we need to show our customers the radical changes we have made and our commitment to further improvements over the coming months and years.

History & Timeline: 2004 - 2008
Telecom Egypt Celebrated 150 years of proudly serving Egypt. This year will witness great celebrations and great leaps in the service we offer our customers.
Never before have we had such aggressive improvement programmes and never before have we been so focused on the needs of our customers. We are taking this issue so seriously that we have launched a nationwide survey titled "Tell us what you think" to enable our customers to tell us what they want us to focus on improving. We are committed to listening and acting.
