The preliminary studies
The museum owns a large collection of preliminary studies for the painting. The studies were drawn by Købke, and he did a thorough job. The façade of the large house to the right, the horse-drawn carriages, the women on the pavements, the cows, the views of trees and rooftops. All were committed to paper in sketchbooks or sketch pads.

The paper conservators’ work with the studies
The Gallery’s paper conservators have assessed the condition of all the preliminary studies. The many sketches for View of a Street in Østerbro outside Copenhagen. Morning Light vary in terms of their condition. Some studies are characterised by brownish-yellow areas caused by the artist’s use of a fixing agent in order to preserve the pencil lines. The fixing agent has yellowed with age. Other studies have stains and spots that are less immediately identifiable. As their treatment was completed, all studies have been mounted in passe-partouts made of acid-free cardboard.
