In their first practice back after a four-game trip, the Capitals are without Alex Ovechkin.
Washington’s leading scorer and star right winger missed Wednesday’s workout with what the team would only describe as an upper-body injury. He is questionable for Friday’s game at Philadelphia. Ovechkin skated 19 minutes 49 seconds in Monday’s 3-2 loss at Vancouver, with his last shift coming as time expired in that contest, but Coach Adam Oates said the injury occurred at some point in the first period.
“He was sore,” Oates said. Head athletic trainer Greg Smith “told me he was a little sore. I think as the game went along probably a little sorer. Yesterday was an off day, we traveled, so he’s getting checked out today.”
Oates declined to give any additional details on Ovechkin’s injury, except to say that the 28-year-old did not suffer a concussion.
In other news, center Jay Beagle is sick and also missed practice. Everyone else, including call ups Dmitry Orlov and Michael Latta, is on the ice taking part in Wednesday’s session.
With Ovechkin missing, here’s what the lines looked like.
“The lineup was dictated by [Ovechkin] not being in practice,” Oates said. The defensemen rotated through drills with several different pairings.
