Yeselson on “Majority Report” Discussing “Fortress Unionism”
On the June 13 edition of “The Majority Report,” Sam Seder interviewed Rich Yeselson on his recent essay for Democracy, “Fortress Unionism.”
In his essay, Yeselson gives the history of the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 and argues that it “codified a series of legal land mines—some of which didn’t detonate for decades.” He also offers a strategy he calls “Fortress Unionism,” by which labor will maintain its current strongholds but avoid costly expansion campaigns.

I want to congratulate Rich for his article Fortress Unionism. I read his viewpoint the following way: At the end of the day, workers make history. Organizational forms come out of struggle, not the other way around. His article does not say give up. It says keep going, but be smart, be strategic, and don't over promise. Understand the objective conditions, and be prepared to adapt and harness when they ripen. No more rose colored glasses.
