11/13/2013 Max Scherzer, P (Det) Scherzer has easily won the AL Cy Young Award after leading the major leagues with 21 victories.

Analysis: Scherzer was the only 20-game winner in baseball. He ranked second in the majors with 240 strikeouts and was fifth in the AL with a 2.90 ERA. Scherzer drew 28 of the 30 first-place votes in results released Wednesday in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Yu Darvish of the Texas Rangers was second, marking the highest finish by a Japanese-born pitcher in Cy Young voting. Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners was third.
11/13/2013 Dustin Pedroia, 2B (Bos) Pedroia had surgery on his left thumb Wednesday. The operation to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb was performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan in Scottsdale, Ariz. The team said it was a success.

Analysis: Pedroia hurt his hand diving into first base on opening day and played the rest of the season with the injury. The 2008 AL MVP appeared in 160 games, batting .301 with 42 doubles and 84 RBIs while helping the Red Sox win the World Series for the second time in his seven-year career.
11/13/2013 Nick Punto, SS (Oak) Punto has agreed to a one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics following a little more than a season with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Analysis: The 36-year-old was acquired by the Dodgers from Boston on Aug. 25, 2012, as part of the nine-player trade that sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez to Los Angeles. Punto hit .255 this year with two homers and 21 RBIs in 116 games.
11/12/2013 Mark DeRosa, 3B (Tor) DeRosa is retiring after a 16-year major league career. The Toronto Blue Jays announced DeRosa's decision in a statement Tuesday, less than two weeks after exercising his $750,000 club option for next season.

Analysis: The 38-year-old utilityman batted .235 in part-time duty last season, his only year with the Blue Jays. He had seven home runs and 36 RBIs in 204 at-bats over 88 games. DeRosa finishes his career with a .268 average, 100 home runs and 494 RBIs in 1,241 games with Atlanta, Texas, the Chicago Cubs, Cleveland, St. Louis, San Francisco, Washington and Toronto. He appeared in the playoffs six times and hit .358 with a .980 OPS in 22 games.
11/12/2013 Marlon Byrd, RF (Phi) Byrd is closing in on an agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies after rebounding to hit a career-high 24 homers this year for the New York Mets and Pittsburgh.

Analysis: The 36-year-old outfielder was acquired by the Pirates on Aug. 27 and hit .364 in six postseason games, with one homer and five RBIs. He batted .291 during the season and had 88 RBIs, one short of his career best.
11/11/2013 Wil Myers, RF (TB) Myers of the Tampa Bay Rays has won the AL Rookie of the Year award after putting up impressive offensive numbers in barely half a season.

Analysis: The right fielder received 23 of 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America in results announced Monday, beating out Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias and Rays teammate Chris Archer. Myers becomes the third Tampa Bay player in six years to be selected Rookie of the Year, joining pitcher Jeremy Hellickson (2011) and third baseman Evan Longoria (2008). The 22-year-old Myers batted .293 with 13 home runs and 53 RBIs in only 88 games.
11/11/2013 Joe Mauer, C (Min) Mauer will be moving from catcher to first base on a full-time basis for the Minnesota Twins. The Twins announced the switch Monday for the 30-year-old Mauer, who missed the last six weeks of the season recovering from a concussion. The Twins said they consulted with Mayo Clinic doctors and team physicians, and Mauer and the organization agreed the move was in the best interest of his long-term health given the inherent injury risks behind the plate.

Analysis: The 2009 AL MVP won the Silver Slugger award for American League catchers this year by batting .324 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 113 games. He sustained the concussion from a foul tip off his mask on Aug. 19. The Twins said Mauer's symptom-free now and has begun offseason workouts without restriction.
11/8/2013 Brayan Pena, C (Cin) The Reds have agreed in principle on a deal with Pena, who has played for the Braves, Royals and Tigers during his nine-year career.

Analysis: The deal is contingent upon Pena passing a physical. Pena, who turns 32 in January, would become the third catcher on the Reds' roster, along with Ryan Hanigan and Devin Mesoraco. Corky Miller was designated outright to the minors after last season and chose free agency rather than accept the assignment.
11/7/2013 Martin Perez, P (Tex) The Texas Rangers and Perez have agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract that includes three club options through 2020.

Analysis: Thursday's agreement came after Perez went 10-6 with a 3.62 ERA as a rookie. He started the season on the disabled list after breaking his left forearm in a spring training game. The 22-year-old became the first Texas rookie to win six consecutive starts and went nearly two months between losses.
11/7/2013 Alex Rodriguez, 3B (NYY) Attorneys for Rodriguez will appear in a New York courtroom for an initial court conference in his lawsuit against Major League Baseball. The New York Yankees third baseman is not expected at the meeting Thursday in Manhattan federal court.

Analysis: Rodriguez was given a 211-game suspension by the league on Aug. 5 for alleged violations of baseball's drug agreement and labor contract. He is challenging the suspension and has sued the league and Commissioner Bud Selig.
11/6/2013 David DeJesus, CF (TB) DeJesus has agreed to a $10.5 million, two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Analysis: DeJesus, a .279 career hitter, was acquired from Washington in a trade on Aug. 23 and started 26 games for the Rays, helping Tampa Bay earn its fourth playoff berth in six seasons.
11/6/2013 Yasiel Puig, RF (LAD) Prosecutors in Tennessee have dismissed charges of reckless driving and speeding against Puig.

Analysis: The 22-year-old Cuban defector played with the Dodgers' Double-A team in Chattanooga before his June call-up. A Chattanooga Police Department report says Puig went 97 mph in a 50-mph zone and was going in and out of his lane before he was pulled over at about 1 a.m. April 28.
11/5/2013 Geovany Soto, C (Tex) Soto and the Texas Rangers have agreed to a $3.05 million, one-year contract, a raise of $300,000. Texas acquired Soto in a trade from the Chicago Cubs in July 2012. He was the NL Rookie of the Year in 2008, when he hit .285 with 23 homers for the Cubs.

Analysis: Soto hit .245 with nine home runs and 22 RBIs in 54 games this season, then became a free agent. While he was a backup to A.J. Pierzynski, Soto became the primary catcher for Rangers ace Yu Darvish the second half of the season.
11/4/2013 Ryan Vogelsong, P (SF) The San Francisco Giants have declined to exercise their $6.5 million option for right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, but are expected to continue negotiating with him about a contract for 2014.

Analysis: Vogelsong went 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA in 19 starts and 103 2-3 innings during an injury-shortened season.
11/4/2013 Alexi Casilla, 2B (Bal) The Baltimore Orioles have declined a $3 million contract option for second baseman Alexi Casilla, making him a free agent.

Analysis: Casilla hit .214 with a homer and 10 RBIs in 61 games in his first season with Baltimore, which claimed him off waivers from Minnesota in November 2012.
11/4/2013 Nelson Cruz, RF (Tex) Cruz got a $14.1 million qualifying contract offer Monday from the Texas Rangers.

Analysis: Cruz served a 50-game suspension this year as a result of MLB's investigation in the Biogenesis case. He was able to play in the AL wild-card tiebreaker after serving his penalty. If Cruz declines the offer and signs with another team, the Rangers would get a compensatory pick at the end of the first round of the 2014 draft. Cruz has until next Monday to make his decision.
11/4/2013 Matt Belisle, P (Col) The Colorado Rockies and right-handed reliever Matt Belisle have exercised their mutual option for 2014, the team announced through its Twitter account Monday. Belisle is scheduled to make $4.25 million next season.

Analysis: The 33-year-old Belisle went 5-7 with a 4.32 ERA in 73 innings this year, striking out 62 and walking 15 in his fifth season with the Rockies.
11/4/2013 Kendrys Morales, 1B (Sea) The Seattle Mariners have made a qualifying offer to Morales that would pay him about $14 million for the 2014 season if he accepts the deal.

Analysis: The Mariners announced they had made the offer on Monday afternoon. Morales has until Nov. 11 to accept or refuse the deal. If he refuses the one-year offer and becomes a free agent, whatever team signs Morales would have to surrender its pick in the first-round of the amateur draft to Seattle. Last season, his first with Seattle, Morales played in 156 games, hitting .277 with 23 homers and 80 RBIs. He also had 34 doubles and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .785.
11/4/2013 Ervin Santana, P (KC) The Kansas City Royals have extended a qualifying offer to Santana, which means they would receive a compensatory draft pick if the free agent signs elsewhere.

Analysis: The qualifying offer this year was $14.1 million. Players have until Nov. 11 to accept. The Royals have expressed hope that they can bring back Santana, but he's coming off a stellar season in which he went 9-10 with a career-best 3.24 ERA. His performance in helping the Royals to an 86-76 record, their best since 1989, could price him out of their market.
11/4/2013 Bronson Arroyo, P (Cin) The Cincinnati Reds declined to give a qualifying off to Arroyo. They chose not to make offers to infielder Cesar Izturis, right-handed reliever Nick Masset and left-handed relievers Manny Parra and Zach Duke on Monday. All could re-sign with the Reds as free agents.

Analysis: Arroyo went 14-12 with a 3.79 ERA last season.
