Secretary of State John Kerry is enjoying strong approval ratings, according to a new poll on Monday.

Sixty percent of Americans approve of the job he’s doing, while just 31 percent disapprove, the Gallup Poll found.

Kerry’s numbers top both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Just over half of Americans, 51 percent, approve of the way Biden is handling his job, with 39 percent disapproving. Only 45 percent approved of Obama’s handling of his job, with 51 percent disapproving.

“Kerry has been secretary of state since February, maintaining an active presence on the international stage almost from the start,” Gallup said. “In addition to his high profile in the Syria matter, he has been involved in trying to restart Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, and asking China for assistance with North Korea.”

Kerry and Obama have nearly identical approval ratings from Democrats — 81 percent for Kerry, 80 percent for Obama. Just 9 percent of Republicans approve of the president, however, while 36 percent approve of Kerry.

The poll surveyed 1,510 adults from Sept. 5-8 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The survey was taken before the weekend announcement of a deal for Syria to give up its chemical weapons.
