For all the news coverage this year of Iran — the election of new President Hassan Rouhani to the first talks between Iran and the United States in more than 30 years — Iran is often portrayed in an unflattering light. But in a series of profiles of Iranians produced by The Takeaway, that image looks slightly different, at least on an individual level.
King Raam is the latest in our profiles. He is the founder and frontman of the punk rock band Hypernova. Six years ago, the band left Tehran for the United States, as President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad cracked down on working musicians. For King Raam, emigrating to North America has had an interesting effect: it has made him work harder to help connect Iranians and Americans. Raam reflects back on the year in Iran and the future of musicians in the country.
