Statistical analysis: A closer look at Dennis Wideman's plus-minus rating

In an effort to provide the team some insurance against a prolonged absence of Tom Poti and Mike Green, the Caps acquired Dennis Wideman from Florida for a third-round pick in 2011 and a prospect. Wideman is a puck-moving defensemen who can clearly help on Washington's ailing power play, but...

Ovechkin's 'vintage' goal clinches a two-point night for Capitals

(Toni L. Sandys/The Washington Post) In recent weeks, Alex Ovechkin has looked like his old self. He's skated with power, driving through opposing forwards and defenders alike, not allowing anything to prohibit him from attacking the net and taking as many shots on net as space will allow. For the...

Quote of the night from Jason Arnott: 'I can't hold anything back'

Jason Arnott knows that part of the reason the Capitals wanted to trade for him was to add another experienced leader into the dressing room. He's won a Stanley Cup, been an NHL captain, played over 1,000 regular season games, and even though he is the new guy in the...

Capitals rally for a 2-1 overtime win over Islanders in new players' debuts

Perhaps everyone was paying a little extra attention to the Capitals' newest acquisitions Tuesday night at Verizon Center but it was hard not to notice Jason Arnott, Dennis Wideman and Marco Sturm in their Washington debuts. In Arnott's case, a pass out in front to Brooks Laich in the waning...

Line change: Will Jason Arnott bring the same qualities to the Capitals that Sergei Fedorov did?

Capitals fans will likely say that Sergei Fedorov earned his $4 million salary when he scored with 4 minutes 59 seconds remaining in Game 7 of the 2009 Eastern Conference quarterfinals, sending Washington to a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers. But the three-time Stanley Cup winner also brought...

Capitals recall Todd Ford

The Capitals have recalled goaltender Todd Ford from Hershey, the team announced this afternoon. This move likely means that Semyon Varlamov is unable to serve as Michal Neuvirth's backup tonight against the Islanders. Earlier today, Coach Bruce Boudreau said the original plan was for Varlamov to back up Neuvirth but...

George McPhee doesn't believe trades will disrupt Capitals' chemistry

At the trade deadline in 2009-10, General Manager George McPhee brought in four players: Eric Belanger, Joe Corvo, Scott Walker and Milan Jurcina. Only the first three would suit up for the Capitals in the remainder of that season and as a whole the transactions, in retrospect, would yield mixed...

Rate the Capitals' trade deadline moves

By 3 p.m. yesterday, the Capitals were an older, more experienced team as General Manager George McPhee traded for center Jason Arnott from New Jersey and defenseman Dennis Wideman from Florida to go along with Saturday's waiver pickup of Marco Sturm. How did McPhee do in his efforts to make...

Marco Sturm fitting right in with Capitals

(Getty Images) After Marco Sturm's first practice in Washington on Monday, the warm feelings surrounding the winger were pretty clear: Even if Sturm is not 100 percent healthy, the Capitals are happy to have him. Washington claimed Sturm off of waivers on Saturday, and several of his new teammates...
