Capital Weather Gang Archive: Local Climate
For the record: Sunday's rain and snow
Heavy rains fell throughout the metro region yesterday, with amounts generally in the 1-2.5" range from east to west spanning Prince George's county and western Fairfax and Montgomery counties. West and southwest of Fairfax county, isolated locations saw around 3" or a little more. Capital Weather Gang's forecast for 1-1.5 inches in the metro area with locally heavier amounts to the west was pretty close to correct, albeit a little conservative. Where our forecast went wrong was in the snowfall department.

Was this winter really that windy in Washington?
I don't know about you, but I thought that this past (meteorological) winter, although not particularly snowy around here, was brutally windy on many days, perhaps more so than in many years. But perceptions are often wrong, particular when it comes to the weather, so I decided to do a little research. Was I right or am I just getting older so that I can't take those "hold-your-hat-down-days" any more?

February & December-February weather recap
The average February temperature of 41.7F at Washington Reagan National Airport (DCA), was a healthy 3.6F above normal. The month recorded four days at or above 70 degrees, in rare company with just four other years, and surpassed only by 1976 (seven such days). In historical context, Feb 2011 ranked 121 in a cold-to-warm ranking of 140 years (or 20th warmest on record) at DCA

Recent March weather: In like lion, out like lamb?
The saying goes: If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb. But how has that saying held up over the last decade?

D.C. area snow chances decreasing, not done
Following above average snowfall in December and January, much of the area has managed 8 to 18 inches of snow so far this season, including 9.5" at Washington and 11.9" at both Dulles and Baltimore. A vast majority of the snow came during Commutageddon. February has been quiet so far. While near average seasonal snowfall is still within reach many spots, we may need some help getting there as we chew away at available winter days. However, it may be that a year such as this (moderate to strong La Nina) offers more tail-end hope than others.

40 below zero: One coincidence & two oddities
We've just experienced (endured) one of our coldest nights of the season in the mid-Atlantic, but prospects are increasing for a very mild period ahead. As a result, this may be one of my last opportunities this winter to say "How low did it go?" after a very cold night (for the record: Reagan National 22, BWI 13, Dulles 11). According to Infoplease, 27 states, including Maryland (but not Virginia and obviously not D.C.), have seen low temperatures of forty degrees below zero or lower.
