Capital Weather Gang: Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossom peak bloom forecast from Capital Weather Gang: April 5

What a difference a year makes. Last year’s record-warm March led to a tie for the third earliest cherry blossom peak on record on March 20. This year, cooler than average weather is likely to push the peak bloom back considerably. We project blossoms will peak between April 3 and April 7, or around April 5.

D.C.’s cherry blossoms have shifted 5 days earlier: what about global warming and the future?

Real-world data support the overall idea that the D.C.’s March climate is warming and the blosssoms’ bloom dates are shifting earlier in response.. How do the historic changes fit in with future projections?

Cherry blossoms bursting out

I have assembled a small collection of images from Friday evening showing the cherry blossoms bursting out at the Tidal Basin. They should be peaking any day.

Washington, D.C. cherry blossoms destined for early bloom, Capital Weather Gang prediction

The May-like warmth forecast over the next week promises to give the cherry blossoms a big shot of adrenaline, likely bringing them to peak bloom considerably earlier than normal (which is around April 1). With the big temperature spike ahead, the peak bloom date could come close to the earliest on record (over the last 20 years) of March 17, 2000.

Poll: when will the cherry blossoms peak?

Yesterday, the National Park Service announced it expects cherry blossoms to reach peak bloom between March 24 and 31 in their centennial year at the Tidal Basin. March weather is one of the main predictors of the peak bloom, and above average temperatures are forecast. The earliest peak bloom on record occurred on March 17, 2000 when conditions were unseasonably warm in the weeks prior. Could the NPS be wrong and 2012’s blossoms bud prior to its projection? Vote in our poll.

Cherry blossoms with an overcast sky

When I went on my blossom photo shoot to the Tidal Basin last Wednesday, I was greeted by a biting wind and a sky filled with dark, stratus clouds. I decided to use an external flash with my camera to illuminate the blossoms.

Spring blooms busting out, weather is fine

The vagaries of spring are upon us. Temperatures up to 80 one day and down to 30 a few days later are the kind of roller coaster conditions that we can expect for a few weeks. Fortunately for we gardeners this is weather that our plants can stand up to...probably better than us.

Spring into action, gardeners!

Notwithstanding the current and recent deluges, planting time is fast approaching. I always like to keep an eye on the map of average temperatures over the past several weeks. It is a good rule of thumb for monitoring soil temperatures in the garden. We have risen above the 40 degree mark and that signals the beginning of plant awakening in our area.
