D.C. area forecast: Shower or two may spoil a fine fall day

Kind of an in-between sort of day today, with considerable clouds and the chance for a few light showers. We’ll see more in the way of sun tomorrow, but then probably cloud up as low pressure moves closer. It’s the same system that brought flooding rains to Texas yesterday, but should only produce occasional showers here as we get into Tuesday.

D.C. area forecast: Mostly nice this weekend, but potentially wetter into the week

It’s getting harder and harder to argue the cool season isn’t here, or at least right around the corner. Today should feature temperatures a bit below the average high of 74 at National and Dulles, but that keeps readings right near the center of comfortable. Overall, the weekend is mostly a winner, and considerably better than what might be coming in the early work week, as rain gathers off to the south and eyes the area.

PM Update: A few showers tonight; decent weekend shaping up

The last in a series of three summery days is in the books, as we passed the 80-degree mark yet again. But 70s are in our future for quite a while behind a cool front sliding through the area this evening. Showers are possible, but mainly from D.C. south. The balance of the weekend is dry, although a few showers may return late Sunday.

Anvil crawler lightning over the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Thunderstorms over the western suburbs of Washington were very slow to move eastward last night. For over an hour, they put on a light show across the western sky. Much of the lightning came in the form of anvil crawlers which branch (or crawl) across the sky near the thunderstorm’s anvil top like tentacles.

D.C. area forecast: Summery air dwindles, then exits; perfect autumnal days might be few

Summertime remains somewhat in control still, but it’s arguably more tolerable than recent. As we remain in close proximity to a cold front, showers and thundershowers are possible through much of today — highest odds perhaps to our south. Saturday is a gem, most likely! But, Sunday and into the workweek the “niceness” may be punctuated by chances of cloudiness with showers. Your umbrella could only get one full day off? Stay tuned!

PM Update: Showers and storms weakening; more possible on Friday

For the second straight day, we’ve had a touch of summer, with highs reaching the low 80s and a little humidity. It’s remained dry, but a wave of low pressure moving in from the west promises scattered to widespread showers and storms into the overnight. The wave exits Friday, but we can’t totally rid ourselves of shower chances.

Gusty storms possible tonight in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas

A summertime air mass has returned to the region and cold front lurks not far to the north. As the front slowly sinks south this evening and a little wave of low pressure rides along it, a cluster of thunderstorms may develop. The best chance of storms lies in D.C. northern suburbs up to around the Mason Dixon line.

D.C. area forecast: Showers possible next 4 days but plenty of dry intervals

My money is on the good rains to come later today followed by lighter and more scattered activity tomorrow. Saturday could still be salvaged as the bulk of the showers may slip to our south. I sure hope so for those outdoor weddings and so we can see the Harvest Moon that night.

PM Update: Warm and humid with spotty shower chances into Thursday

By this past summer’s standards, this afternoon’s temperatures and humidity levels were a walk in the park. But when you compare these conditions to the dry, crisp air in recent days, it definitely felt muggy. It stays this way into tomorrow, and we throw in the chance of some showers as a cold front edges closer.

D.C. area forecast: Comfortable today, showers and 80s sneak attack tomorrow

Our post-summer season is continuing to work out fairly nicely with high temperatures frequently in the comfortable 70s. Today is no exception, although clouds increase later today. We’ll hit a brief roadbump tomorrow as temperatures pop into the low-to-mid 80s. Some showers are possible tomorrow and that risk continues into Saturday as a cool front gets tangled up in our area. Sunday may finally break free with more sun.

PM Update: Keeping the nice weather streak going

Temperatures continue to run below average, but given what that means here at the surface with highs in the upper 60s to near 70, it’s a rather pleasant “chill.” After another night of cool readings tonight, we’ll see warmer conditions tomorrow, but it’ll still be squarely in the “nice day” range.

D.C. area forecast: Good-looking days to open up fall’s first week, but may turn damp midweek

The overwhelming majority of days this month have been sun-filled and fantastic. So let’s keep it going. We’ll do that through Tuesday but Wednesday into Thursday I must introduce the chance of some showers. The Friday through Sunday period is a tough forecast. It may end up fine but I worry the pattern might favor chilly, damp conditions - at least part of the time.

D.C. area forecast: Autumn starts mild, but p.m. showers and thundershowers herald cooler air

We welcome fall today on a somewhat summery note. However, autumnal conditions won’t be too far behind the official start, as we ride a bit of a temperature roller coaster this weekend. The fairly sharp change in temperatures is ushered in by a cold front pushing through. Out ahead of that, we could see some gusty showers and thundershowers blow through later today. Then it’s pure glory once again.

The work week ended beautifully with lots of sun and temps cresting near 80 degrees. The weekend presents two very different types of days. On the first “official” day of fall Saturday, it’s summer-like, with highs 84-88. On Sunday, fall fully expresses itself with cooler, breezy conditions. The transition occurs late Saturday, when a cold front produces possible showers and thunderstorms.

PM Update: Clearing skies tonight then a tranquil fall-like Wednesday

The region endured a blast of strong to severe storms, but fortunately, no widespread damage or power outages. Some showers may linger through mid-evening, then we gradually clear out. Wednesday should be spectacular, though a bit cooler than we’re used to.

Damaging winds, possible tornadoes threaten D.C. area

Severe weather is expected today as a strong early autumn cold front sweeps through the area. Damaging winds, torrential and tornadoes are possible in thunderstorms that develop along and ahead of the front.

D.C. area forecast: Windy and stormy today, much nicer tomorrow

Mother Nature is turning on the spigots to keep September rains on track, and she is working very efficiently this time. Unfortunately, the rains may accompany severe storms this afternoon or early evening (stay tuned for updates). Although his muggy air mass is not welcome, we clear it out by late tonight to make for a much better day tomorrow. The balance of the week into the weekend is mostly dry and cool, but we may have some more showers Sunday.

PM Update: Rain chances on the way up; quite stormy tomorrow

We’re almost getting used to these highs in the 70s, which is a good thing as averages have now fallen to there. Thanks to plenty of clouds today, afternoon temperatures are running a few degrees below normal, but I doubt there are too many complaints! Clouds should continue to thicken heading into the evening, and showers are also approaching from the south and west.

D.C. area forecast: Clouds build today; stormy Tuesday, more fall splendor beyond

We’ve just concluded an incredible 8-day streak with no rain, little humidity and extaordinarily comfortable temperatures. We keep the comfy temps and even the rain holds off most of today, but it turns stormy tonight and especially Tuesday. Then we start another stretch of great weather Wednesday, but a notch cooler than what came before.

D.C. area forecast: A splendid Sunday, then increasing clouds and rain chances

Clouds and rain are on the way, but we’ve got more than enough time to squeeze out another gem to close out the weekend. Even a good part of Monday may not be bad despite more clouds. A cold front (with low pressure developing along it) brings rain chances starting tomorrow afternoon, though the best odds for steadier, heavier rain should wait until Tuesday.

D.C. area forecast: A blissful weekend, but turning stormier after

Today and tomorrow are the last days with average highs 80 or above until May 31st for D.C. It’s prime “awesome day season” for sure. We’ll live up to that idea today, and most likely tomorrow. Afterwards, a strong cold front approaches as a storm system develops along it. That combo promises rain for the region. Happily, murkiness wants to focus on the workweek rather than the weekend. And for that, we can be doubly thankful while out enjoying the next two days.

D.C. area forecast: A work week’s worth of nice days!

The Nice Day campaign is in full swing. High pressure and its trusty surrogates (sunshine, light breezes, comfortable temperatures, and low humidity) are scoring record-high approval ratings based on the latest polling. There is a strong chance that each day this week could earn a Nice Day badge, creating quite a post-summer rally. The issues become more cloudy by the weekend as rain chances sneak back into the debate. However, the change would likely find support from the rainfall deficit reduction advocates, so everybody wins with this weather.

D.C. area forecast: Damaging storms possible today before a fall preview arrives

Our summery conditions of late are about to be given the boot by a strong cold front. Unfortunately, that means strong to severe afternoon storms are a pretty good bet across much of the area. While this isn’t looking on par with the derecho in June, it has the potential to end up being more significant than many storm events around here. If you’re heading out, particularly this afternoon or evening, please do pay close attention to the weather. When thunder roars, head indoors. The good news is, it’s going to turn amazing once we’re behind the front.

PM Update: A few storms in southern suburbs; hot and still humid tomorrow

Even though it felt like it might rain at any minute given all the moisture in the air, we’ve managed another day without more than a handful of spots getting doused. However, in the city and to the south and east, some heavy downpours and frequent lightning have occurred and remain possible this evening. Tomorrow’s another warm and humid day, with a slight chance of showers/storms.

Leslie upgraded to a hurricane, on path towards Bermuda

Tropical storm Leslie added 5 mph to its peak wind speed (up to 75 mph), becoming the 6th hurricane in the Atlantic in the 2012 season. It’s positioned 465 miles south-southeast of Bermuda and slowly headed in that direction. It may be in the island’s vicinity Saturday or Sunday.

Tropics: Leslie and Michael strengthen, while Isaac may come back for an encore

The extremely active 2012 Atlantic hurricane season continues. Leslie and Michael are swirling in the open sea, while a piece of Isaac’s remnants might regenerate into tropical storm Nadine.

Nighttime muggies in Washington, D.C.: record warm overnight temperatures

This swampy air mass is making it hard to cool down at night. On Tuesday, record high minimum temperatures were tied or established at all three local Washington/Baltimore airports. See the above graphic.

D.C. area forecast: Still swampy with a risk of heavy soakers

For those tired of this tropical air mass that’s taken up residence here in the D.C. area, there is light at the end of the tunnel - in the form of drier and cooler air next week. Until then, we’re stuck with moderate to high humidity, highs approaching and above 90, and a daily risk of showers and storms.

Nationals vs. Cubs weather forecast: Early shower? Otherwise kinda muggy.

The focus for any showers or storms slides south and east of the area during the evening, but could see a pre-game or early-inning shower or thundershower before that happens.

PM Update: A few evening showers, better chance Wednesday, very humid

The rains predicted from Isaac’s remnants have underperformed - for the most part - but the humidity has not. A thick, muggy air mass holds in place through tomorrow when we probably have our best chance of scattered showers and storms. This is due to an approaching cold front which will serve as a focus for all of this moisture.

Obama and Romney on climate change science

With the race to the White House heating up, it raises the question: where do the presidential candidates stand on global warming? In short, Obama is a global warming “believer” but has provided little substance to back his conviction and seldom talks about it. Romney, on the other hand, presents a wavering, sometimes mocking assessment on the severity of the issue.

D.C. area forecast: High humidity with roving rains from Isaac’s remnants

This very humid, late-summer, Isaac-enhanced air mass stuck over our area creates a complicated precipitation forecast. This particular air mass can trigger heavy showers and sometimes thunderstorms essentially at any time to drench your activity. And we are stuck in this soup until this weekend when a big cold front sweeps the area. So be prepared for more rain risks and sometimes heavy downpours.

D.C. area forecast: Bouts of heavy rain, possible flooding thru Wednesday from Isaac’s leftovers

The deluge in the District and southern Maryland Sunday was just the beginning. Through the middle of the week, wave after wave of heavy rain is possible as Isaac’s remnants slowly trudge through the region. More instances of localized flooding are likely before we gradually dry out late week.

Nationals vs. Cubs weather forecast: Good chance for showers and storms

It’s not a guarantee, but showers and storms are likely (60 percent chance) to develop during the game. Delays and even postponement are on the table, although there’s a chance they get the game in.

Lightning near Mt. Vernon Square in Washington, D.C. Saturday night

The atmosphere was juiced Saturday night. Hot, humid air had pushed temperatures into the mid-90s during the afternoon, and the sultry air lingered deep into the evening. Meanwhile, storms began firing up along a stationary front sprawled over the region. They were loud and they were electric. Craig Hudson was ready with his camera to seize the moment.

Nationals vs. Cardinals weather forecast: Scattered showers and storms could douse and delay

It’s a warm and muggy one at the ballpark. Scattered showers and storms are likely across the D.C. area. Not a sure bet they’ll soak the stadium, but definitely have the rain gear handy.

D.C. area forecast: Meteorological fall starts toasty and humid, and an increasing rain risk lurks

50 days of 90 degrees or higher, 28 of which were 95 or higher... it’s nice to finally put meteorological summer (Jun-Aug) behind us! Now we say another unofficial good-bye to summer this weekend, and while temperatures will “cool” thanks to more clouds and rain chances, there’s no major hint of fall in the forecast just yet. Today is maybe the pick of the next three for doing things outdoors, simply because rain chances are relatively low. It’s not going to be the most pleasant time during the day though.

Nationals vs. Cardinals weather forecast: A bit of July in September

Unless you’re a fan of baking in the sun, be glad this isn’t a midday game. Heat and humidity probably call for an extra beer (plus lots of water!). If there’s a t’shower, it’ll be isolated.
