South Africa — Diverse People Unite

South Africa’s motto, Ike e: /xarra //ke, “Diverse People Unite, conveys the intent and goal of the Republic of South Africa since 1994. As Nelson Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Mandela has passed away at 95, we focus on South Africa’s future as well as its past. Activities include the country’s rich heritage in arts and culture, its political and personal struggles to be released from apartheid, and the establishment of a democracy. South Africa is a case study of the effectiveness of international economic sanctions and America’s changing foreign policies.

NIE Curriculum Guides

The Washington Post articles, commentary and photographs stimulate classroom activities and discussion of the who, what, where, why and how of the civil rights movement, highlighting the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963 and the 50-year anniversary commemorations. Students will meet leaders, consider the role of women, and analyze the media's presence in organizing, maintaining and communicating the struggle for equality.

Activities in this guide include geography and map studies, a bathymetric challenge and an assignment to write like a science journalist. Students have opportunities to follow the journeys of discovery of techie trekking journalism Paul Salopek and educators and students at sea on the E/V Nautilus.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, passed in 2010, focuses attention on the role of federal and state governments, insurance companies, businesses and individuals in providing for health care, from preventive care to benefits of insurance coverage and the use of technology to enroll citizens. Students locate the facts, analyze the issues, study different stances, explore explanatory journalism and use a variety of media to express their points of view.

The SPORTS section reflects the Washington metropolitan area’s appreciation for sports by covering the latest in local, national, regional and international competition.  Specific exercises have been created for the SPORTS section that expand a student’s self-knowledge and reinforce the strategies that assist in developing an efficient and effective reader.
