Turkey’s Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa seismic vessel, which has been conducting offshore oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, could enter Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone in three weeks to continue exploration pending prime ministerial approval, Energy Minister Taner Yıldız has said.

“The Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa is drilling off the coast of the Mersin-İskenderun-Antalya region. It will work there, for three weeks more. Later, we will speak with Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip Erdoğan] as to whether it will enter Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone. If the prime minister approves, the vessel could enter to the north or south of Cyprus because it has both a technical and political dimension,” Yıldız told private broadcaster A Haber in an interview early today.

Yıldız also said they might buy a new vessel depending on the work load.

Turkey has strongly protested against Greek Cyprus’ energy exploration in the Mediterranean, branding the moves illegal and starting its own exploratory drilling off Turkish northern Cyprus. The Turkish government says all revenues obtained from the drilling operations off the coast of Cyprus should be distributed between Greek Cyprus and Turkish Cyprus and have frequently warned that Turkey would undertake unilateral drilling in the event of any failure to equitably share revenues.
Ankara has also said companies could be shut out of future Turkish energy investments if they become involved in Greek Cypriot energy exploration work.

Turkey decided in March to suspend energy projects with Italian giant Eni in retaliation for the company’s involvement in oil and gas drilling off the coast of Greek Cyprus.

Brit in Turkey: Well yes, quite for it is not exactly likely that the Greeks would get involved, not that they are capable of doing so anyway! Good to see Colonel John (albay) back amongst us again :-)

NIKOS MARINELLIS: If things got really nasty in Syria, Israel, Iran or perhaps Egypt don't you think it might be useful to have a base nearby if the British are called on to help?

@Brit, the era of Queen Victoria, bases, colonies etc is long gone.@Albay,voices of animocity like yours show that the Greek Cypriots are not the evil ones, as you characterise them, others are.P.S. the income per capita in the "two bankrupt states" as you call Greece and RoC are (2012, IMF and World Bank data) 22,055 USD and 26,389 USD respectively, whereas in prosperous Turkey it is only 10,609 USD.Check wikipedia. So give us a break.Regards!

@Thessalonian what utter rubbish you post! The TRNC and Turkey stand together and if we wish to drill in our own waters for gas and oil we wil!! Who is going to stop us,the 2 bankrupt staes of greece and greek occupied cyprus, can not even afford the fuel for their ships and planes! @ Nikos we Turkish cypriots never again wish to be ruled by greek cypriots, whom we do not trust or believe, and as for not being stupid,we are not stupid we remember the last time the evil greeks cypriots ruled cyprus!

NIKOS MARINELLIS: If it wasn't for the British (and the Cypriots who fought with them) the peoples of Cyprus would now have German as their mother tongue. Also don't you think it is still necessary for there to be bases around the world in case of any threat? For your edification Britain still has some American bases on it's soil and most of the British utility companies are French owned. There are indeed still some American and British involvement in Germany 70 years after WWII.

@Brit in Turkey:Its easier for Britain to keep its sovereign bases on a divided-weak Cyprus, than in a united-strong one, where Cypriots would kick the british army out of their country. The bases have even a potential to claim an exclusive economic zone out to 200 miles (that could include the Aphrodite gas field).Imagine a Turkish or Greek base in Yorkshire claiming british gas!Thats why C.Green is pro permanent Cyprus division, but Cypriots (TC's & GC's) are not stupid.

What a poor article...!!! Firstly the vessel in question is a seismic survey ship that's incapable of drilling and secondly Turkey has already attempted to drill on-land CY at Occupied Syngrasi and all it achieved was to screw up the water table. ... and of course at a time when preparations are under way to re-start the CY talks Turkey is threatening to stir up conflict.
