National Geographic Museum announces new vice president position

In new role for the museum, the National Geographic Museum announced that Kathryn Keane will be the vice president of National Geographic Exhibitions. She will oversee the exhibitions at the flagship center on M Street N.W., as well as the original traveling exhibitions.

Columbia Heights welcomes dance and symphony collaboration

The Dance Institute of Washington and the National Symphony Orchestra are collaborating on a concert set for Jan. 9 in Columbia Heights. Four musicians from the NSO and the young dancers troupe from DIW will perform at the dance company’s headquarters at 3400 13th St. N.W. Starting at 4:30, the event is free.

Eva Zeisel work back on display at Hillwood

The design world lost one of its great artists, Eva Zeisel, who died recently at age 104. The Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens is displaying a few pieces of Zeisel’s pottery, initially collected by Marjorie Merriweather Post, to mark her passing.

Kate Middleton selects art and museum charities

As is the custom with the royal family, Kate Middleton has selected a number of charities to support. The Duchess of Cambridge tapped the National Portrait Gallery, one of Britain’s esteemed museums, and The Art Room, a small organization that helps children through art.

Tom Cruise’s “Mission:Impossible” to play at the Natural History IMAX

The Smithsonian’s IMAX theater at the National Museum of Natural History will feature Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible---Ghost Protocol” starting Friday. The film is also playing at the National Air and Space Museum’s IMAX theater at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles International Airport.

Congresswoman objects to Smithsonian tours to Cuba

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has raised some concerns about the Smithsonian-sponsored trips to Cuba. Smithsonian Journeys, a division of the Smithsonian which does not receive federal funds, organizes trips around the world, including four in 2012 to Cuba.
