Girl power on display in Super Bowl ad

“More than, pink, pink, pink!  We want to think, think, think!” That’s the catchy chorus of one of the most memorable Super Bowl ads last night. It featured girls protesting all of the pink, girlie toys they are offered (ovens and scooters and dream houses and poodles, all pink, pink, pink) and sending them off into space. The toy is GoldieBlox and the point was this:  Why should boys have all the fun with their adventure-based toys and games?!

Here’s a bit of data to put the commercial in context, courtesy of the National Girls Collaborative Project, which looks to encourage girls to take up science, technology, engineering and math (the STEM subjects):

According to the Web site, 58.1% of the workforce is made up of women and here’s the breakdown in STEM jobs:

22.3% of chemical engineers are women;

13.1% of civil engineers are women;

8.8% of electrical and electronics engineers are women;

17.8% of industrial engineers are women; and

5.5% of mechanical engineers are women.

As the girls in the ad put it: “Come on, ditch your toys! Girls make some noise!”
