New York Has Been Named the World’s Fashion Capital

It’s up to you, New York, New York. Or rather our mayor, Bill de Blasio.

New York has just pulled off a major upset having been awarded “Top Global Fashion Capital” in Global Language Monitor’s 10th annual survey of most-discussed fashion cities. Take that, Paris!

We, along with the rest of the industry, hope de Blasio, like former mayor Bloomberg, will recognize the weight that fashion carries for the city’s economy and cultural fabric, thus introducing more pro-fashion initiatives. Besides, we can’t get ahead of ourselves, as we only beat Paris by a mere .005%. London, which won in 2012 and 2011 has fallen to third place. The Financial Times suggest that this might be reason enough for British Fashion Council chairman Natalie Massenet to bring up the issue to David Cameron.

The most interesting finding from the study is that L.A. jumped up five spots to the number four slot, which we find very interesting considering that we’d be as quick to write off the sunny city as a foreigner. As perplexing as it might seem to us, we’re all about North America having more pull in the fashion arena.

** The Global Language study is a year-long study that tracks fashion-related words and phrases on the internet and blogosphere, 250,000 news outlets, and social media.
