Prof. Raymond U . Lemieux

OTTAWA, CANADA, NOVEMBER 1992. The World Cultural Council presented the 1992 Albert Einstein World Award of Science to Prof. Raymond U. Lemieux, Professor Emeritus of the University of Alberta, Canada. The Official Awarding Ceremony took place at the National Research Council of Canada which acted as host for 1992.

Prof. Lemieux was selected as the recipient of the Award in recognition to his more than 40 years of research into the chemistry of carbohydrates. His work has been the key factor in converting this area of research from and academic specialization to one of great practical significance in important fields as blood typing and medical chemistry.

His efforts have made possible the preparation of complex oligosaccharides which act as artificial antigens, and the development of affinity chromatography to isolate the corresponding antibodies. The practical applications are attested by the use of these reagents in the commercial production of antibodies specific to human blood group determinants, and in a new generation of blood group typing reagents. These developments have evolved largely through Prof. Lemieux's research on molecular recognition.

Prof. Lemieux was born in Alberta, Canada in 1920. He received his BS in Chemistry in 1943 from the University of Alberta with honors. In 1946 he received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the McGill University.

He is recipient of numerous honors and awards during his productive career that includes 259 scientific papers and a Biographical memoir.
