Mohamud wants UN to extend weapons purchasing mandate

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud wants the United Nations Security Council to extend the country's mandate to purchase arms after it expires in March, Somalia's RBC Radio reported Thursday (January 30th).

Mohamud said that Somalia's army remains inadequately equipped for its fight against al-Shabaab, which, though progressing, could be undermined by a lack of proper arms and other military equipment.

Mohamud travelled to Addis Ababa this week to attend the African Union Summit, where he lauded Somalia's progress in fighting al-Shabaab.

"In this summit, Somalia is committed to achieving its interests, especially in the area of security," he said. "With every year that passes, our journey out of the darkness becomes more real for all Somali citizens. We are making great strides and we must continue until we achieve our dream of a safe and prosperous Somalia."

The Security Council voted last March to partially lift an arms embargo to allow Somalia to import light arms for one year.
